Memphis to Continue Conference Play at Charlotte
Oct 02, 2025 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team looks to continue its winning streak in conference play with a road matchup against Charlotte. The match is set to start at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Tigers currently hold a slight edge in the early stages of the American Conference race with six points in three matches, while the 49ers have four. Both programs have a shared opponent in Tulsa, with Memphis securing a 3-2 victory over the Golden Hurricane and Charlotte winning by a score of 2-1.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (3-4-3, 2-1-0 American) secured its second-straight 3-2 victory in conference play, this time against Tulsa on Sept. 27.
For the second-consecutive match, both Miller Lashlee and Samuel Mutiri found the back of the net, followed by a game-winner in the final stages of the match. This time, Eben McIntyre scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute of the contest.
Team play continues to define Memphis' style entering the month of October as the Tigers have already matched their team assist total of 18 from a season ago. Sixth year forward Luciano Galizzi leads Memphis with six assists this season, including back-to-back matches with two assists against UAB and Tulsa. He sits tied with Eben McIntyre for the team lead in points with eight, as McIntyre has scored twice and assisted on four goals. Midfielder Saad Chaouki still stands as Memphis' leading scorer with three goals this season, and the pairing of Miller Lashlee and Samuel Mutiri are each currently sitting with two goals in two conference matches.
Both McIntyre and Lashlee were honored by the conference for their performances against Tulsa, earning Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
Goalkeeper Filip Sabatti has moved his record to 3-2-2 on the season with his second-consecutive victory. On the season, Sabatti has 24 saves and holds a goals-against-average of 1.57.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte (3-3-2, 1-0-1 American) comes into the match after playing the current leader in the American, South Florida, to a scoreless draw this past Saturday.
The 49ers boast a balanced attack and have found success from a pair of players who have mainly served as substitutes. Their two leading goal scorers, Elias Arsvoll and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou, each have three goals this season in just over 300 minutes of play. Arsvoll is also Charlotte's leader in points with nine, currently averaging one point about every 34 minutes.
A key to Charlotte's operation is taking advantage of their depth. The 49ers have 13 players who have appeared in every match this season and only one outfield player (Andreas Evangelou) has played at least 600 of 720 total minutes this season. For comparison, Memphis has only nine players who have appeared in each of the Tigers' 10 matches this season.
Friday's contest will feature a battle between the American Conference Preseason Co-Goalkeepers of the Year as Leonard Stritter will be in net opposite of Filip Sabatti. Stritter has played every minute this season for the 49ers and holds a 1.00 goals-against-average with 28 saves and two clean sheets.
Stritter has only faced 10 or more shots in one match this season, while the Tigers have at least 10 shots in six of their 10 contests.
THE SERIES WITH CHARLOTTE
The Tigers trail 5-9-3 in the all-time series dating back to 1988. The Tigers won the most recent matchup in 2024 against a then No. 9 ranked Charlotte side and are looking for their first-ever winning streak against the 49ers.
In last year's meeting, a shot by Adam Yousfi deflected off a Charlotte defender to beat goalkeeper Leonard Stritter in the 50th minute for what became the game-deciding goal. Memphis goalkeeper Filip Sabatti had three saves in what was the third in a streak of four clean sheets by the Porec, Croatia native.
