MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the first time since the opening of the 2016 campaign, the University of Memphis volleyball squad is playing at home on consecutive weekends.
So, no packing bags. No rushing to the airport. No riding buses and staying in hotels. It's a feeling that Tigers head coach April Jauregui and her team continue to enjoy over this two-week span.
"Being home two weeks in a row has been a tremendous benefit in terms of rest and recovery," said Jauregui. "It also is great to play in front of our home crowd. They have been incredibly supportive."
Memphis hosts Houston and Tulane in American Athletic Conference play this weekend. The Tigers meet Houston Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. (CT) and then face Tulane Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. (CT). All home matches are played at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Last weekend, Memphis hosted both SMU and Tulsa at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers split those two matches, dropping a hard-fought decision to the Mustangs and defeating the Golden Hurricane.
This current homestand is longest for the Tigers since the start of the season. Memphis opened 2016 with two-straight home tournaments (six matches). However, since Sept. 4, the Tigers played at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse only twice (Sept. 30/Oct. 2) until this recent stretch of four-straight home matches.
Although it is a much-needed second-straight weekend at home, Jauregui is having her squad prepare for these matches the same way.
"We will approach this weekend just like the rest," Jauregui said. "We have been preparing all week, and we look to build on the progress we have been seeing on the court. I am pleased with the way the players have responded."
The Tigers bring some momentum into this week's action after two solid performances against SMU and Tulsa last weekend. Memphis took conference leader SMU to the wire, before dropping a 3-0 decision. In that match versus the Mustangs, there were 28 ties and nine lead changes. The Tigers then rebounded for a 3-1 victory over Tulsa.
Memphis looks to continue its winning ways, but to do that, the Tigers have to be at their best against Houston and Tulane.
"Houston has been gaining momentum and really playing some aggressive volleyball," Jauregui said. "We will have to play a clean, low-error match versus the Cougars.
"Tulane is a team you have to be prepared to go the distance. They have the ability to put a lot of pressure on you, so we need to be prepared to battle and earn our points."
