MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Here the Tigers go again. For the fourth time in the last five weekends, the University of Memphis volleyball team is on the road, this time playing at East Carolina Friday and Cincinnati Sunday.
The Tigers travel to Greenville, N.C., Oct. 7 to face the Pirates in a 6 p.m. (CT) match, and then continue their weekend road swing to Cincinnati, Ohio, to meet the Bearcats Oct. 9 in a 12 p.m. (CT) encounter.
Last weekend, Memphis (8-8, 0-4 The American) dropped decisions to Connecticut and Temple at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Despite the slow start in conference play, head coach April Jauregui notes the squad is still battling.
"We focused on our team defensive system this week," said Jauregui. "The players worked really hard. We know we have to keep fighting and grinding it out. I know our players will respond this weekend. We are excited to get back on the court."
Memphis meets East Carolina Friday, and the Tigers look to continue their success at Williams Arena. Since the Pirates joined the American Athletic Conference in 2014, Memphis is 2-0 in Greenville with 3-2 victories in both 2014 and 2015. Conversely, the Pirates are 2-0 at Elma Roane Fieldhouse over the same two seasons.
The Pirates bring a 10-5 overall record into Friday's match, having lost all five of its league encounters. In its most recent action, East Carolina lost to Cincinnati 3-0 at home Oct. 5.
"East Carolina is always a strong opponent for us," Jauregui said. "The past two seasons, we've play some closes matches with them. We have to be prepared to go the distance with the Pirates."
Overall, Jauregui's teams have an 11-2 record against East Carolina since she took over the Memphis program in 2008.
Another program that Jauregui's Tigers recently have played well against is Cincinnati. Since the longtime rivals became conference foes again in 2013, Memphis is a perfect 6-0 against the Bearcats.
However, 2016 is a different season. Cincinnati is 9-7 overall, but 4-1 in American Athletic Conference play. The Bearcats, the 2016 preseason favorite to win the league, is second in the current conference standings with their lone loss to first-place SMU.
"Cincinnati is a strong contender this season," said Jauregui. "The Bearcats have an efficient offense. Our goal is to execute the game plan and play a clean match. Serving and passing will be key factors for us in both matches."
