UTRGV comes into the 2016-17 season with just five players who saw time for the Vaqueros last season, in addition to first-year head coach Lew Hill, who was at Oklahoma last season.
Ā Ā Ā
Leading the way for UTRGV during the season is sophomore guard Antonio Green, who averaged 11.6 points and 3.0 assists per game last season as a freshman. Also back is Dan Kimasa, a 6-10 forward from Kigali City, Rwanda, who averaged 10.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Ā Ā Ā
After scoring 37 points in a 101-75 exhibition win over NCAA Division III opponent UT Tyler, Green scored 20 points on 4-of-9 shooting from long range, and making half of his 14 overall attempts against UT Martin on Sunday afternoon. Xavier McDaniel Jr. scored a game-high 27 points for the Vaqueros, converting on 11-of-16 shots from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in 26 minutes before fouling out. Nick Dixon scored 16 points while pulling down a team-best seven rebounds off of the bench in an eight point, 88-80 loss to UT Martin.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Ā

Ā
Among the newcomers to the team is Xavier McDaniel Jr., son of former Wichita State and NBA star Xavier McDaniel. Xavier McDaniel Sr. played against Memphis one times in his career, an 85-73 Memphis win on February 7, 1983.
Ā Ā Ā
The game, which was played at Mid-South Coliseum, saw McDaniel record a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, but was overshadowed by 22 points from both Bobby Parks and Andre Turner, while Keith Lee scored 14 points with eight rebounds.
