Women's Basketball Heads To Southern Illinois Sunday

This is the only road trip for Memphis in the month of December; final road non-conference game of the year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team heads north for its only trip in the month of December as it takes on Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon. Tip-off against the Salukis is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will broadcast on ESPN3.

This is the first game in seven days for the Tigers. Memphis most recently dropped a contest against Little Rock at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse to move to 3-5 on the year. After the game against Southern Illinois, the Tigers will be at home for the next five games, including the start of conference play.

Opponents in the five-game home stretch for the Tigers are Southeast Missouri (Dec. 16), Louisiana Tech (Dec. 19), Nicholls State (Dec. 21), Vanderbilt (Dec. 28), and Temple (Jan. 1). The Vanderbilt and Temple game are televised on ESPNU and ESPN2.

Taylor Williams, after leading the Tigers to a 1-1 record last week, was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Against Northwestern State, Williams scored a team-high 16 points with a pair of assists and against Little Rock, she scored a team-high 14 points. At home this season, Williams is scoring over 16 points per game.

Cheyenne Creighton leads the Tigers in scoring overall with 13.4 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 per game and five blocks this season. Creighton has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season.Â

This is the 19th meeting between the Salukis and the Tigers. Memphis leads the all-time series 13-5, but Southern Illinois leads Memphis on the road, 3-2. The Tigers won the most recent game by a score of 61-58 on November 29, 2015 at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Southern Illinois is fresh off of a 77-70 victory over Southeast Missouri, one of the Tigers opponents this season, on Friday night. Overall, the Salukis are 4-4 overall and 3-1 on their home court.

Three players are averaging in double figures for the Salukis in Kylie Giebelhausen, Kim Nebo, and Rishonda Napier. Giebelhausen leads the way with 14.6 points per game after scoring a season-high 26 points against the Redhawks and Nebo is pulling down a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.

Prior to defeating Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois was on a two-game skid, dropping games against UT Martin and UAB. Wins for the Salukis this season in addition to SEMO include Murray State and Brescia at home and Purdue on the road.

Cindy Stein is the head coach of Southern Illinois and is currently in her fourth season at the helm. The Illinois grad turned a 5-25 season in 2013-14 into a 20-13 season last year.
