Tigers Fall Late to Hawks 82-79

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite leading for over 26 minutes in the game, and a second consecutive near-triple-double from sophomore Dedric Lawson, the Memphis Tigers fell 82-79 to the Monmouth Hawks.
Lawson scored 18 points with 14 rebounds and seven assists, leading five Tigers in double-figure scoring while recording his 25th career double-double. Jeremiah Martin tied a career-high with 14 points, while K.J. Lawson scored 13, and Markel Crawford and Chad Rykhoek each scored a dozen, Rykhoek's marking a new career-high.
Memphis had 17 assists on 27 made baskets, and had just eight turnovers for an better than 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Tigers took a quick 4-0 lead on a pair of dunks from Rykhoek, before the visitors opened a 17-8 run to lead by five at 17-12 with 13:29 to play in the opening half.
Memphis fought back behind an 18-4 run capped by a tip-in from Lawson; however, the Hawks answered back with six straight points to cut into the deficit. Monmouth got to within two following a three-pointer by Je'Lon Hornbeak, but Memphis closed the second half on a 13-5 run to lead by 10 at 45-35 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Tigers struck first in the second half when K.J. Lawson made a lay-in in Memphis' first possession, and the 12-point margin proved to be the high-water mark for the hosts.
Monmouth kept chipping away at the deficit, and took their first lead of the second half on a three-point play with 8:16 to play in the game.
Over the last eight minutes, the largest lead gained by either team would be three points, and Memphis' final lead came with 1:20 to play when Markel Crawford made a lay-in to give the Tigers a 79-78 lead.
Monmouth's Justin Robinson made a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play to put the visitors ahead by one, as Memphis was unable to get a shot off on its next time with the ball. Hornbeak iced the game with seven tenth's of a second on the clock with a pair of free throws, securing the victory for the Hawks.
Memphis made 46.6 percent of its shots in the game (27-of-58), and 21-of-32 from the charity stripe (65.6 percent). Memphis had eight blocked shots, including a career-high four from Rykhoek, while the team forced seven steals and nine total turnovers in the contest.
The Tigers next travel to Norman, Oklahoma, to face off against the Sooners of Oklahoma on Saturday, December 17 in an 11:30 a.m. tip-off on CBS.
