Dec 17, 2016 | Men's Basketball
NORMAN, Okla. - Three players scored 20 or more points, with a fourth at 19, as the Memphis Tigers took down the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon in front of a nationally televised audience, and 9,081 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center by a 99-94 score.
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 26 points to go with 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season and 26th of his career. Jeremiah Martin scored a career-high 26 points, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Markel Crawford also reached a career-high with 20 points, while K.J. Lawson scored 19 with a game-high 13 rebounds in the win.
Dedric Lawson dished out four assists and blocked three shots - both game-highs, as Memphis hit 28-of-32 free throws in the game, a percentage of 87.5, while making 33-of-58 (56.9 percent) from the field overall. For the first time this season, Memphis had more turnovers than assists in a game, with 11 assists and 13 turnovers.
Memphis gave the Sooners their first non-conference home loss against an unranked team in the last three years, and did it after leading for just four minutes and 48 seconds. The win also gives Memphis nine wins in its last 11 games against teams that advanced to the NCAA Final Four the year before.
Oklahoma jumped ahead early, and led by 11 at 19-8 six minutes into the game; as the Sooners used an eight and a half minute stretch (from 17:09 until 8:22) in which the hosts did not miss a shot, with the last basket of that stretch coming on a lay-in by Jordan Woodard to put Oklahoma up by a dozen points at 35-23.
After a miss, Oklahoma answered with two more straight makes - including a three-pointer by Christian James, the Sooners led by their highest margin of the contest at 40-27. Dedric Lawson answered with a three-pointer to close the gap to 10, as Memphis cut the deficit to nine at 47-38 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Oklahoma kept Memphis at arms-length for the first eight minutes of the second half, and led by 11 with 11:21 to play before the Tiger defense tightened. Memphis held the Sooners off of the scoreboard for the next four minutes, while running off nine straight points to cut the gap to two at 66-64.
The back-and-forth continued, as Memphis would climb to within a field goal, and Oklahoma would answer to go up by two possessions, and led by five at 77-72 with 3:13 to play in regulation. The Tigers answered with eight straight points, a jumper by K.J. Lawson, a lay-u pby Crawford, and four free throws by Martin, to jump ahead by three at 80-77.
The teams exchanged possessions of an Oklahoma field goal followed by two Tiger free throws, as Crawford put Memphis ahead 84-81 with 13 seconds to play; however, Woodard banked in a three-pointer with a second to play in regulation to put the game into an extra five-minute period.
Memphis never trailed in the extra stanza, jumping out to a five-point lead on a three-point play by Martin and a dunk from Rivers; however, the hosts quickly responded with a lay-in and three-pointer by Woodard to knot the score at 89. Back-to-back Dedric Lawson baskets put Memphis ahead by four, and the Tigers never led by less than three the rest of the way, as the team iced the game by making all five of its overtime free throws, improving to 6-1 all-time against the Sooners.
Woodard scored a team-high 22 points for the Sooners, making 9-of-18 shots from the field and 4-of-9 from long range, while four others reached double figures.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, December 21 when the team hosts the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a 7 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
