Tigers Topple Houston in Overtime
Jan 19, 2017 | Men's Basketball
HOUSTON – The Memphis Tigers held Houston to just one point through the first five minutes of the game, and gave up just three points in the overtime period to open and close the game on defensive stands in a 70-67 overtime win on Thursday evening.
K.J. Lawson had career-highs with 28 points and 16 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season. Dedric Lawson also had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Markel Crawford pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds while scoring nine points, as Jeremiah Martin scored 10 points with three assists, two steals, and two rebounds.
Memphis shot 42.6 (29-of-68) from the field, and out-rebounded the Cougars 47-to-40, including 18 offensive rebounds and 42 points in the paint.
The overtime game was Memphis' second this season, as the Tigers also picked up an extra-time win on the road at Oklahoma.
K.J. Lawson kicked off the game for the Tigers with a made three-point basket 37 seconds into the game, and a lay-in two minutes later to put the hosts ahead 5-0. The Tiger defense did not allow its first field goal until 6:01 into the game, before which Memphis led 9-1.
The eight-point lead would be the highest for the Tigers, and was duplicated with 10:59 to play following another K.J. Lawson lay-in.
Houston proceeded to score the next eight points to draw even with Memphis, but the Cougars could not get their first lead until the hosts ran off six straight points to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage, and had a six-point lead with eight seconds to go before Martin closed the half with a driving lay-in to send the Tigers into the locker room trailing 34-30.
Following a Danrad Knowles lay-in with 17:25 to play, the Cougars led by six points; however, behind five straight points from K.J. Lawson and a basket from Dedric Lawson, put Memphis ahead by one at 41-40.
The Cougars, trailing for the first time in the second half, rebounded by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to push ahead by seven points. Houston led by five points with 3:39 to play; however, Memphis would not back down, taking a two-point lead on a Martin three-point-play with 12 seconds to play in regulation.
In the final 12 seconds of regulation Houston's Wes Van Beck got off a jumper that was blocked by Martin; however, Houston's Knowles picked up the loose ball and finished the lay-in to send the game to an extra five-minute session.
The overtime period was started by a pair of Dedric Lawson free throws, and Memphis never trailed in the extra five minutes. The Tigers led by as many as five in overtime, before the hosts got a lay-in with 16 seconds left.
The Tigers turned the ball over following the basket; however, two three-point attempts would not find their home, securing the three-point Memphis win.
Houston was led by Rob Gray who scored 21 points on 9-of-24 shooting from the field, while Damyean Dotson scored 14 and Knowles a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, January 22 when the squad hosts the Knights of UCF in a 3 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
