Second Half Comeback Falls Short Against Owls
Feb 12, 2017 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A 14-1 Memphis second-half run helped to nearly erase a 17-point Temple lead; however, the Tigers could not climb the rest of the way back, falling at home 74-62 on Sunday afternoon.
Dedric Lawson, who a game earlier became the program's 51st member of the 1,000-point club, climbed three spots on Sunday behind Ā 27-point effort in which he made 10-of-22 shots from the field, and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down 12 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season - tied for the seventh-most in school history - and 34th in his career.
Markel Crawford made 6-of-12 shots from the field for 17 points, while adding two assists.
K.J. Lawson pulled down 10 rebounds, as he and Dedric have pulled down double-digit rebounds in the same game 11 times this season. K.J. Lawson also added seven points, an assist, and a blocked shot, while Craig Randall II scored six points in 21 minutes of action off of the bench.
Memphis came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 12-4 lead behind the hot shooting of Dedric Lawson andĀ Crawford, as each had six points early in pushing the Tigers to an eight-point lead.
The Tigers' margin reached as many as nine at 23-14 following a Randall three-pointer with 11:43 to play in the opening half. Temple ran off seven straight points to climb to within two, before Dedric Lawson made a mid-range jumper to push the Tiger lead to four at 25-21 with 8:42 to play in the opening period.Ā
That Lawson jumper would be Memphis' final points of the first half, as Temple held the Tigers scoreless over the final eight and a half minutes of the first half, in addition to the first two minutes and 13 seconds of the second half for a scoreless span of 10:45. During that stretch, Temple's margin went from trailing by four points, to leading by 17.Ā
Temple's lead grew to as many as 19 with 13 minutes to play, before the Tigers mounted a streak of their own, rattling off 19 of the game's next 21 points to climb within six on a Randall three-point basket, before eventually trimming the lead to as few as three with 6:19 to play on a Dedric Lawson jumper; however, that would be as close as the hosts would come in the game.
The visitors stretched their lead to as many as 12 down the stretch, with Temple making its last three three-point baskets to close out the 74-62 Owl win on Sunday afternoon.
Quinton Rose scored a team-high 18 points for Temple, while Daniel Dingle had 13 points and seven assists.
Memphis returns to action on Thursday, February 16 when the squad travels to Hartford, Connecticut, to take on the UConn Huskies in an 8 p.m. ET game on ESPN2.
