Feb 26, 2017 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite 20 points from K.J. Lawson, 16 points and five assists from Jeremiah Martin, and a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double from Dedric Lawson, the Memphis Tigers fell to Houston 72-71 after erasing a 13-point Cougar first half advantage.
K.J. Lawson hit 9-of-15 shots from the field, while pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out two assists.
Martin - following his 23-point game at Cincinnati on Thursday, scored 16 points, making 7-of-13 from long range while dishing out five assists.
Dedric Lawson pulled down 11 defensive rebounds, and dished out four assists with three blocked shots, while scoring his 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from long range.
Junior guard Markel Crawford scored 11 points, including two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions that put the Tigers even with Houston with four minutes to play in the game.
Memphis made 27-of-56 shots from the field (48.2 percent), and out-rebounded the Cougars 38-to-33.
Houston and Memphis battled back and forth through the first four minutes of the game, as the Cougars jumped ahead by two at 10-8. The visitors then rolled off eight straight points, including two three-pointers from Damyean Dotson, to lead by 10.
The Cougar lead grew to as many as 13 in the first half at 28-15, halfway through the opening stanza.
Memphis fought back, and used strong defense from the group of Martin, K.J. Lawson, Christian Kessee, Jake McDowell, and Craig Randall held the Cougars to 3-of-12 shooting over the final seven and a half minutes of the half, as the Tigers closed to within as few as three points, before Dotson drained a jump shot with three seconds on the first-half clock to send Houston into the locker room with a 40-35 advantage.
In the second half Houston re-ran its lead to as many as nine with 7:31 to play before the Tigers rolled off an 11-1 run, highlighted by back-to-back Crawford three-pointers, that gave Memphis its first lead of the game at 67-66.
American Athletic Conference scoring leader Rob Gray answered back with a three-point play, and the Cougars led by three before Dedric Lawson converted a three-point play with 29 seconds on the clock to re-tie the game at 71 points apiece.
On the next possession, Dotson was fouled driving to the lane with 3.3 seconds to play, and hit 1-of-2 free throws to put Houston ahead. Memphis was able to get the ball to halfcourt and called timeout with 1.5 seconds left; however, a three-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked, securing the Houston win and a season split between the two teams.
Dotson scored a game-high 31 points, making 11-of-24 shots from the field and 5-of-16 from long range, while Gray scored 17 on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, March 2, when the team hosts the Tulane Green Wave on senior day, as the men's basketball program will honor Christian Kessee, Chad Rykhoek, and Jake McDowell.
