Big Second Half Propels Tigers to Win on Senior Day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers out-scored Tulane 58-31 in the second half, turning a five-point halftime deficit into a 22-point victory on senior day at FedExForum on Thursday evening.
Memphis came out of the locker room on fire, and over the first 10:55 of the second half out-scored Tulane 40-14, including using runs of 7-0, 5-0, and 11-0 to pull away from the Green Wave. The Tigers made 13-of-17 shots during that nearly 11-minute span, while making an equal total - 13-of-17 - from the charity stripe.
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 29 points, making 11-of-15 shots from the field and 2-of-4 from long range, while K.J. Lawson scored 13 and Jeremiah Martin 12. Dedric Lawson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Martin dished out five assists.
The Tigers were out-rebounded 43-to-36 in the game; however, had a 15-to-8 assist-to-turnover ratio, and forced 15 Green Wave turnovers, five on steals.Ā
In the first half there were five ties and four lead changes, with nearly all of them coming in the first 12 minutes of the game. The teams battled back-and-forth, with Memphis holding a five-point, 12-7 lead six minutes into the contest, before Tulane scored 12 of the next 16 points to climb ahead by three at 19-16 with seven minutes on the clock.
The Green Wave's lead grew to as many as eight with 3:17 to play in the first half, before the Tigers trimmed the margin to five heading into the locker room at halftime.
Each team scored three points out of the gate in the second half, with Tulane holding onto a five-point lead before the Tigers started on their run, and out-scored Tulane 35-9 for the next six and a half minutes, turning the five-point deficit into a 21-point advantage.
Memphis' lead grew to as many as 24, before two free throws in the final minute and a half gave the game its final score of 92-70.
For the game Memphis hit 31-of-63 shots from the field (49.2 percent), 7-of-18 from long range (38.9 percent), and 23-of-33 (69.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Tulane - which hit 51.6 percent of its shots in the first half - was held to 32.4 percent from the field and 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from beyond the arc.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 4, when the team travels to Dallas, Texas, to take on the SMU Mustangs in a 3 p.m. tip-off on ESPN2.
