Luke Biasi and Charles Blankenship score in final eight minutes to grant Tigers win
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Two unanswered goals in the final eight minutes and 21 seconds by the University of Memphis men's soccer team led the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over Missouri State Sunday afternoon. It was the first victory of the season for Memphis as the Tigers improve to 1-3-2 on the year.
"I'm just pleased for the guys, it was a well-deserved victory," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "To go down a goal was a bit unfortunate, but the guys kept their composure and came out in the second half and were able to put two away."
Defense was the name of the game in the first half as the teams combined for five total shots. Missouri State capitalized on one of its two shots in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Tigers.
With time winding down in the second half, freshman midfielder Luke Biasi scored the equalizing goal in the 82nd minute to put the score at 1-1. The goal came after a corner kick by David Zalzman was not cleared by Missouri State and after bouncing around in the box for a few touches; Biasi was able to put the finishing touches on it. Burke Fahling had the final touch to Biasi and was credited with the assist on the goal.
With just under three minutes remaining in the match, redshirt-senior Charles Blankenship scored the game-winning goal on a header to the upper part of the goal. The set piece began with a corner kick by Zalzman. Ultimately, Blankenship was assisted by Bryant Huerta and Biasi to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Memphis finished the match outshooting the Bears eight to five and finished with seven corner kicks. Jake Leeker finished the match with the only save in the match. It was the first goal of the season for both Biasi and Blankenship.
The Tigers are off this weekend before traveling to Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky the week after. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
