Memphis to play Canisius in consolation bracket Friday
ORLANDO, Fla. – Tyler Harris scored 14 points, Kyvon Davenport added 12 and two others – Jeremiah Martin and Kareem Brewton -- finished with 10 apiece, but the University of Memphis dropped its opening-round game Thursday in the AdvoCare Invitational at HP Fieldhouse.
Oklahoma State placed six players in double figures, led by Thomas Dziagwa's 14 points, to post an 84-64 victory. Memphis (2-2) will play Canisius at 12:30 p.m. (CT) today. Canisius lost, 83-56, to defending national champion Villanova in the first game.
The Tigers were undone by poor shooting and by being beaten on the boards. Memphis shot 31.4 percent in the second half and 36.4 percent for the game. The Cowboys (3-1) outrebounded the Tigers, 40-30, and blocked 10 Memphis shot attempts.
Oklahoma State's 6-foot-10 freshman forward Yor Anei blocked six shots and was 6-of-7 shooting. He had 12 points.
Tigers coach Penny Hardaway was disappointed that his team allowed the Cowboys to shot 59 percent in the second half and 57 percent for the game. Oklahoma State was 20-of-28 from two-point range.
"Right now we are really struggling on the defensive end," Hardaway said. "And we don't have a rim protector. I was embarrassing to have our team go out and defend the way it defended."
Down by 10 at the half, the Tigers fell behind by 15 at the first media timeout of the second half. Two 3-pointers by Dziagwa during the stretch provided the most damage. The Cowboys extended their lead to 21 (65-44) a few minutes later and were up by 21 (72-51) with 7:35 to go. Oklahoma State's biggest advantage came with two minutes remaining when it led by 22.
Martin, the team's senior guard, said for the Tigers to be better offensively they'll need to improve in transition. Memphis had only six fast-break points
"Whenever we are going one-on-one and taking 3s and not getting paint touches, we struggle," Martin said.
Memphis struggled in the first half as they shot 41.9 percent and scored a season-first-half low of 31 points.
The Tigers trailed most of the half, although they briefly held a 6-5 lead on a Davenport layup and a 22-20 advantage after a deep 3-pointer from the right wing by Harris. Harris led the Tigers with 10 first-half points. Memphis led for only 34 seconds in the game.
After Harris' 3-pointer, the Cowboys reclaimed the lead at 27-24 on a trey by Dziagwa. Oklahoma State eventually built a 10-point advantage (41-31) just before the half after back-to-back 3-pointers by Mike Cunningham.
Oklahoma State shot 55.6 percent in the first half and made it difficult in the paint for the Tigers, who had six shots blocked.
