Four Tigers score in non-conference win
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis men's soccer picked up its sixth consecutive win on Tuesday night, earning a 4-1 win over UAB at Billy J. Murphy Track & Soccer Complex.
Memphis used two first-half goals and two second-half goals to pull away from the Blazers. Four Tigers found the back of the net in the win.
"Every game is different, but they were relentless," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Four guys scored tonight, you know, at times we moved it very well."
Sam Ashton got the scoring started for the Tigers, netting his ninth goal of the season off of the feed from Christoforos Kourtis. Ashton is the first Tiger with 20 points in a season since Mark Sherrod registered 28 points in 2012.
Returning the favor, Ashton combined with Gurman Sangha to assist Kourtis on the second score of the night. Only 20 minutes later, Jackson Morse would score his first goal of the season, cleaning up a header off of a corner kick from Alexandros Ierides.
Memphis took the 3-0 lead into the halftime break, keeping the visiting team at bay for the entirety of the half. UAB was allowed zero shots through the first 45 minutes, and just three for the entirety of the match.
Continuing to pressure the Blazers, Memphis started the half with a pair of shots from Kourtis and Maliek Howell, but neither of them found the net. Righting the ship some, UAB finally found its first shot of the match in the 59th minute. From there, the momentum would shift back and forth between the teams.
A trio of corner kicks by UAB resulted in a PK, allowing the Blazers to get on the board.
The Tigers would tack on one more goal on a PK of their own, earned and taken by Jovan Prado. Smacking the shot past the keeper's outstretched arms, Prado claimed his fourth goal of the season to cap the scoring for Memphis.
"UAB is a quality opponent, we want games like that at home," added Mulrooney. "We wanted to rotate some minutes tonight. We've got 26 guys on our roster for a reason, and I'm not scared to use any and all of them."
Memphis remains at home for its next appearance, resuming conference play against Temple. First touch against the Owls is set for 7 p.m. CT on Saturday.
