Tigers Take Down Long Beach, Fall to No. 8 Arkansas

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico. – Memphis had two big games in the second day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, taking down Long Beach 4-3 and falling to No. 8 Arkansas 4-3 in eight innings.
Following today's games, Memphis moves to 2-2 overall.

GAME ONE: MEMPHIS: 4, LONG BEACH: 3
How it happened:
- Memphis got on the board early; in the top of the first inning, an error from Long Beach allowed Taylor Smrt to score and give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
- Alyssa Dean would draw a bases loaded walk in the top of the 4th inning that sent Gracie Morton home and extend their lead out to 2-0.
- Camryn Wineinger picked up her fourth hit of the weekend in the top of the 7th inning and sent Alexis Dale and Alyssa Deanacross home plate to make it a 4-0 lead for the Tigers.
- Long Beach would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the 7th after Justine Briones knocked in a three-run homerun to cut Memphis' lead to just one.
- A double play from the Tiger defense would end the game and give them the 4-3 win.
- Dale and Wineinger recorded their first multi-hit game of the season after going 2-3 and 3-4, respectively.
- Hallie Siems got the start and the win today after going 6.1 innings with four strikeouts while Kailey Hilderbrand notched her first save of the season after 0.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO: MEMPHIS: 3, #8 ARKANSAS: 4 / 8 INNINGS
How it happened:
- Kendall Lee got the ball rolling for Memphis in the top of the 1st when she had a sacrifice hit to short that allowed Alyssa Deanto score to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
- The very next batter, Gracie Morton, brought Alexis Dale home when she singled to the left side to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
- It would be Lee again in the top of the 5th inning with her second RBI of the game; she found a hole on the left side of Arkansas' defense to send Dean across home plate to extend the Tiger's lead to 3-0.
- Arkansas would come screaming back in the bottom of the 7th inning after Taylor Ellsworth had a bases clearing double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to extra innings.
- Memphis would attempt to take the lead in the top of the 8th after LaNya Bates headed for home; but she was tagged out at the plate after a rundown with the Razorback shortstop and catcher.
- Rylin Hedgecock would get the walk-off single for Arkansas in the bottom of the 8th inning and hand Memphis the 4-3 loss.
- Alyssa Dean and Camryn Wineinger recorded two hits each.
- Mikayla Hoschak got the start in game two going 6.1 innings with one strikeout. Jenna Gibson finished up the rest of the game with 1.0 inning of work.
- The Tigers will compete in their final day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge tomorrow.
- Memphis will face-off against Long Beach State again with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
