Tigers Return Home Saturday to Host No. 13 Clemson in White Out
Dec 15, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers are prepped for a Saturday afternoon clash against No. 13 Clemson at FedExForum. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+, and the Tigers will be looking to extend a two-game winning streak.
Saturday's game is a White Out as the Tigers return home for the first time in nearly a month. When the ball is tipped it will have been 29 days since Memphis last played inside FedExForum, the longest stretch between home games since the 1951-52 season. That year, Memphis played 14 games away from home over 41 days (Dec. 6, 1951 to Jan. 15, 1952) in Eugene Lambert's first season as head coach. It was also the first season the Tigers played at Memorial Gymnasium.
Memphis brings a two-game winning streak into Saturday's contest after its 81-75 win at No. 21 Texas A&M on Dec. 10 in College Station.
No. 13 Clemson enters the day as one of only seven undefeated teams in the country at 9-0. They defeated TCU, 74-66, last weekend in Canada to improve to 5-0 this season away from its home floor.
It will be the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Memphis is No. 39 in the NET rankings through games of Dec. 14 and has a Quadrant 1 opportunity Saturday. Clemson comes to town ranked No. 11 in the NET with a 3-0 record in Q1 games. They are tied for second nationally and one of only six teams with three or more Q1 victories (Alabama, South Carolina, Pittsburgh).
The reigning AAC Player of the Week and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week David Jones leads the league and ranks 23rd nationally in scoring at 20.1 points per game. Combined with his 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 steals, he is one of only seven players in the country to lead their team in points, rebounds and steals.
Senior point guard Jahvon Quinerly ranks third in the league in assists (4.8) after dishing at least four in 8-of-9 games. He is coming off back-to-back games with at least 20 points and five dimes.
Senior guard Caleb Mills has produced his two best games of the season after insisting he come off the bench. The Arden, North Carolina product is averaging 15.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in the wins over VCU and Texas A&M. In that span, he is 8-13 from the floor, 4-5 from deep and 10-12 at the free throw line.
