Tigers Face Off With Georgia State, Central Arkansas
Aug 31, 2023 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following two road wins during opening weekend, the Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will come home for the first time this season when they host Georgia State on Friday afternoon. They will go back on the road Monday evening to Central Arkansas.
Memphis (2-0) collected back-to-back wins last weekend with a 2-0 season-opener shutout over Green Bay before grabbing a 3-1 decision at Northern Illinois.
"Going on a long road trip was beneficial off the field since it gave the guys time to bond and spend time together," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Coming home with two wins was our goal and we were able to accomplish that against two very difficult teams in their respective home openers."
Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos had a breakout weekend to kick-off the new season, scoring three goals and assisting on another. He would go on to win the AAC's Offensive Player of the Week award, be named to TopDrawerSoccer's National Team of the Week and was tabbed as College Soccer News' National Player of the Week.
Along with Rodrigues dos Santos, Colin Welsh opened his junior campaign with two wins including a solo shutout against Green Bay. Welsh would not allow a goal in 169 minutes of play while making eight saves. He would earn his sixth AAC Weekly Award after his performance.
Georgia State (1-1) is coming off a redemption win after dropping their season-opener to Belmont. The Panthers would secure a 5-1 win over UAB this past Monday where four different Georgia State players scored.
Friday's match will be the third meeting between the Tigers and Panthers all-time. The last time the two teams met in 2016, GSU came away with the 4-1 win in Atlanta.
Central Arkansas (0-2) has had a rough start to the season, dropping their first two games of the 2023 season – their most recent a 5-0 loss to #19 SMU in Dallas this past Monday.
The Bears and Tigers had an exciting match-up last season; after UCA took a 4-1 lead into the break, the Memphis offense would explode in the second half, scoring five unanswered goals in just 38 minutes. Rodrigues dos Santos led the team with two goals while Alberto Cruz and Jackson Kim chipped in goals as well.
Friday's match against Georgia State is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick-off with coverage available on ESPN+. Monday's game at Central Arkansas will start at 6 p.m.
