Tigers Face Off with Northern Illinois, Central Arkansas
Aug 28, 2024 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a pair of tough matches to open the season, Memphis men's soccer will look to get on track this weekend with two more games at the Billy J. Murphy Track & Field Complex.
The Tigers will host Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. Thursday before welcoming Central Arkansas from across the river at 6 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
Richard Mulrooney's squad didn't get the results they'd hoped for on opening weekend with a 2-1 loss to Lipscomb and a 3-0 defeat to Evansville.
The Tigers had plenty of opportunities in both matches, outshooting their opponents 33-19 overall and dominating corner kicks 13-2, but were unlucky in finding the net. Junior transfer Lleyton Imparato scored the lone goal against the Bisons.
Match One: Northern Illinois
NIU opened its season with split results last weekend, falling 1-0 to St. Thomas (Minn.) on Thursday before taking down Chicago State 4-2 on Sunday at home.
The Tigers and Huskies met last season for the first time ever with Memphis winning 3-1 on the road.
Match Two: Central Arkansas
The Lions also went 1-1 to open the year, shutting out Evangel (Mo.) 3-0 at home before falling 3-2 on the road against No. 15 Wake Forest.
Memphis is 14-4-1 all-time against UCA and have met in 17 of the last 18 seasons, with 2020 being the exception. The Tigers have won two straight in the series, including a 2-1 win in Conway last season and a 6-4 victory at home in 2022.
