Tigers Open 2024 Season in Carrie Yerty Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis volleyball team will kickoff its 2024 season at home in the inaugural Carrie Yerty Classic August 30-31 inside the Larry O. Finch Center.
The Tigers will play Friday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State and Tennessee Tech, respectively, while taking on Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. first serve. All matches can be streamed on ESPN+.
"We are very excited for this weekend for a few reasons: first, we get to kick off the 2024 season at home in front of our incredible fan base against good opponents and secondly we get to honor Coach Carrie Yerty in the Inaugural Carrie Yerty Classic," head coach Sean Burdette said. "It is such an honor to host and have her family here for the event and lastly, it is also our Alumni weekend where former greats return and connect with our current Tigers"
Memphis returns four of its top five power hitters from last season in Clara Bednarek, Tabytha Toelke, Madison Rice-Locket and Autumn Flynn. The group combined for nearly eight kills per set a year ago and accounted for almost 60 percent of the team's kills.
On the assists, Jordan Heatherly and Catalina Martinez return for their in the Memphis Blue following seasons where they recorded 4.8 and 4.5 assists per set, respectively.
Defensively, Abigail Schlueter is back in the libero jersey for the Tigers after a rookie season where she picked up a team-best 404 digs and was second on the team with 37 service aces.
Mississippi Valley State is coming off a 4-24 season where they went 0-16 in SWAC play. The Devilettes welcome in 13 freshmen for the 2024 season while Torre Giron returns as the team's top hitter from last year with 5 kills.
Tennessee Tech comes into the new season after a 13-17 record and a 9-9 spot in OVC action in 2023. Madolyn Isringhausen returns to the court for the Golden Eagles as their top threat at the net following a 422 kill, 293 dig season. Following the junior, three other Tennessee Tech hitters recorded 200+ kills last season while Jordan Karlen surpassed the 1,000-assist mark with 1,098.
Austin Peay is coming off an 11-18, 4-12 year that saw them drop six of their last seven contests of the season. Following the loss of their top four hitters from a year ago, the Governors welcome in seven new faces for the 2024 season.
