Tigers Split Opening Day of Carrie Yerty Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Volleyball team kicked off its 2024 season by hosting the inaugural Carrie Yerty Classic Tournament and securing their first win of the year.
The Tigers (1-1) dominated the Mississippi Valley State (0-2) Devilettes with a clean 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-17, 25-10) to start the day. Autumn Flynn led the team with eight kills while Hannah Jones had seven kills.
Memphis controlled the match, jumping to an early lead in each set while never letting the Devilettes within five points the entire game. Eleftheria Baxa and Madison Rice-Locket also contributed six kills each with the defense holding MVSU to .000 hitting for the match.
The Tigers ended game one with 12 services aces, Jordan Heatherly on fire, recording five of the aces herself. She also had a game-high 30 assists.
In their next match against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (2-0), the Tigers dropped the first set and were unable to bounce back, ultimately losing 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25- 22).
Jones had another impressive game with nine kills and senior Tabytha Toelke followed with five kills and 11 digs.
Memphis racked up five service aces in the game, with Abigail Schlueter tallying four of them.
The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow for the final day of the Carrie Yerty Classic against Austin Peay at 1 p.m. at the Larry O. Finch Center. Fans can stream the match on ESPN+.
