MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will be back in the Bluff City Friday afternoon when it plays host to the SIUE Panthers in a rematch of last seasons' first-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Memphis (2-4-0) is coming off one of its best performances of the season with a 3-1 road victory at Georgia State last Sunday. The Tigers scored their quickest goal of the season in the seventh minute when Lleyton Imparato buried a header for his team-leading third tally of the season.
Luciano Galizzi and Logan Longo also added goals in a victory that was dominated from start to finish by Memphis.
Imparato and Longo were each tabbed American Conference Honorable Mention on Monday for their performances. Not only does Imparato lead the Tigers in goals, he is also tops with two assists and eight total points, while Longo is tied with the team lead in assists and ranks second with six points.
Filip Sabatti earned the win in net, moving to 2-2-0 on the year. He leads the squad with 16 saves between the pipes in 360 minutes played.
SIUE (1-2-1) is coming off its first win of the season last weekend with a 1-0 home victory over Saint Louis. Its prior results saw a season-opening 1-1 draw with Michigan State and a pair of 4-0 defeats to Ohio State and Dayton.
In that victory, Yasha Schaerer scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute with a penalty kick goal.
For the season. Schaerer and Nic Muench have the only goals for the Panthers, while Patrick Coleman has the lone assist. SIUE has used two keepers, but Rob Gjelaj has earned all results with a 2.44 goals allowed average and 23 saves.
The Tigers and Panthers have met three times in the last two seasons, although one meeting was an exhibition. Memphis leads the all-time series 7-6-3 and have not lost a match to SIUE since 20217. All seven victories from the Tigers have come at home.
Memphis will be back in action next Friday (Sept. 20) with the AAC opener at Tulsa. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
