MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis Volleyball team came from behind after dropping the opening set to win 3-1 against Indiana State.
The Tigers (5-4) were led by Tabytha Toelke and Hannah Jones with 14 kills each, while Tiffany Snook, Madison Rice-Locket and Clara Bednarek all recorded six kills. Bednarek also contributed big on the defensive side with seven blocks.
Jordan Heatherly had an impressive game with 40 assists to go along with 14 digs, three kills, five service aces and three blocks on her way to being named the Huey's Player of the Game
Memphis started the match off on a 5-0 run leading to an early Indiana State (3-5) timeout. The Sycamores slowly chipped away at the lead and ultimately tied the score at 14-14 before taking their first lead at 19-14 behind a 5-0 run. The Tigers battled, but dropped the opening frame 25-19.
The second set started saw back-and-forth action until the Tigers used a 4-1 run to grab a 10-7 advantage. After the Sycamores fought back to even the score midway through the set, Memphis took the last four points with kills from Snook, Toelke, and Rice-Locket to give the Tigers a 25-19 victory to even the match.
They carried that momentum into the start of the third set going on a 6-0 run. Memphis kept its six-point lead for most of the set until Indiana State used a 6-0 of its own to tie things up at 19-19. The Tigers controlled the remainder of the set with a 4-point run en route to a 25-22 win.
The fourth set stayed close throughout the first half before an 8-1 run from Memphis put the home team in front 16-10. Indiana State did not have a response as the Tigers dominated the rest of the way. Heatherly put down back-to-back aces to extend the lead before the Tigers took home the final four points to get a 25-15 win to seal the match.
