Tigers Fall in Dramatic Fashion at Wichita State
May 16, 2025 | Baseball
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two of a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Wichita State, 6-5, on Friday night at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kansas.
Down to their final out and trailing by two runs in the top of the ninth, Tiger Shane Cox delivered a clutch two-run single to tie the game at 5-5. Ultimately, it was not enough, as Wichita State's Mauricio Millan came up with a two-out knock to walk the Shockers off as winners.
The Tigers moved to 22-32 (8-18 AAC) on the season while Wichita State improved to 19-34 overall (10-16 AAC). With the loss, Memphis is officially eliminated from AAC Conference Tournament contention.
"I was proud of the guys for fighting to the very end," head coach Matt Riser said. "Obviously it's a hard pill to swallow right now … At the end of the day, we fought. Shane Cox came up with the big hit to tie it in the ninth. Who else would you want up there in that spot? He's been a warrior for us all year long, giving us everything he's got. [Chase] Nixon gave everything he had to go get that ball. [Brayden] Sanders left it all out there. You can't ask for much more than that."
