Tigers Drop 2-0 Contest to Bruins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (0-1-1) men's soccer fell against Belmont (2-0-0) by a score of 2-0 Thursday evening at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex.
An early penalty kick allowed Belmont to take a lead and the Bruins later scored due to an own goal from Memphis.
KEY MOMENTS
- 18' – A handball in the box by Memphis' Carson Banham awarded Belmont with a penalty kick in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Brock Kiper stepped up for the Bruins and scored the first goal of the match.
- 35' – After working his way down the line, Belmont's Jaxon Stokes attempted a shot that was initially going wide but was deflected in off Memphis defender Fletcher Hedge.
- 48' – The Tigers had multiple chances to in succession to break the shutout, with a blocked shot from Miller Lashlee and a shot from Luciano Galizzi that was saved by Belmont goalkeeper, Grant Calvert.
- 62-65' – Within a three-minute-span, Memphis had two corner kicks, one throw-in and two blocked shots, but were unable to break the Belmont defense.
- It is only the second time in program history that Memphis was defeated by Belmont, bringing the series history to 18-2-1 in favor of the Tigers.
- It was also the first time that head coach Richard Mulrooney suffered a loss at the hand of the Bruins, bringing his all-time record against Belmont to 6-1-1.
- Despite the loss, Memphis outpaced Belmont in total shots (14-to-6) and corner kicks (11-to-3).
- Shots on goal were slightly in favor of Belmont, 4-to-3.
- Abdallah Traore and Adam Aboohamidi logged their first appearances for the Tigers.
- Carson Banham logged his first collegiate start and is the second freshman to earn a start in as many contests.
- Anthony Grudko earned his first collegiate start in the season-opening match against Lipscomb.
- Only two Tigers, Filip Sabatti and Saad Chaouki, played a full 90 minutes in the loss.
- Memphis committed more than 10 fouls for the second-straight match, committing 15 compared to Belmont's 10.
- Three yellow cards were issued during the course of the match, with two yellow cards issued to Memphis for the second-straight contest.
- Dino Stavros and Anthony Grudko were assessed yellow cards for Memphis.
- Parker Forbes was issued Belmont's only yellow card of the evening.

Memphis continues a short homestand on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 5:00 p.m. against Mercer. This game will serve as Memphis' senior night, with recognition prior to the match. The contest will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
