Memphis Volleyball Opens 2025 Season at Rumble at the Roane

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis volleyball opens its 2025 season by hosting the Rumble at the Roane at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers will face USC Upstate at 10 a.m. and Northwestern State at 7 p.m. on Friday, before closing the weekend against Tennessee State at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. All matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE MEMPHIS TIGERS
The new era begins for Memphis volleyball as head coach Cheri Lindsay took over the program in January 2025 as well as the return to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the first time since 2019. Lindsay was the head coach at Prairie View A&M for two seasons where guided the Lady Panthers to a 36-29 record.
The Tigers are returning three players: Courtney Nix, Abigail Schlueter and Jasmyn Tate while welcoming 13 newcomers for the 2025 campaign. Amanda Hardt comes to Memphis after two seasons at Omaha, where she recorded 498 kills in 46 matches. Janyah Henderson reunites with Lindsay after having two successful seasons at Prairie View A&M where she was part of the All-Southwest Athletic Conference team selection, also garnering SWAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2023.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
USC Upstate (0-0) is coming into the 2025 season after going 13-15 overall and 8-6 in the Big South Conference last year. The Spartans was selected third in the Big South Conference Coaches' Preseason poll after finishing third last season. Ady O'Grady, Savannah Page and Kamyla Vega David were selected to the All-Big South preseason Team.
The Spartans returns seven players including Ady O'Grady and Savannah Page, who combined for 538 kills. The Spartans feature a mix of newcomers to supplement the seven returners, with six freshmen and three transfers.
Northwestern State (0-0) is under the direction of Ben Kaszeta who took over the program in January. Last season, the Lady Demons went 8-17 overall and 3-13 in Southland Conference.
Northwestern State are returning four players, including Deja Benjamin and Olivia Bush who combined for 243 kills and 183 blocks. The Lady Demons boast a young team, touting eight freshman, four juniors and one senior.
Tennessee State (0-0), under ninth-year head coach Donika Sutton, looks to build on a historic 2024 campaign that saw the Tigers return to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007. TSU finished 10-22 overall last season and 6-12 in conference play.
Senior setter Sagia Reilly returns after recoding 678 assists in 2024. Outside hitter Malae' Lacy earned OVC Players to Watch honors, while transfer middle blocker Sydni Polston joins the program after playing at Mississippi State.
THE SERIES AGAINST THE LADY DEMONS, TIGERS, AND SPARTANS
This marks the first ever matchup between Memphis and USC Upstate in program history. The Tigers have won all three matchups against Northwestern State, most recently in 2014. Memphis holds a 6-2 record against Tennessee State, though TSU has won the last two matchups in 2012 and 2013.
