MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer program has a chance to clinch itself a position in the American Conference Championships in its regular season finale at Tulsa on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Hurricane Soccer Stadium.
Kickoff for the match is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (7-3-5, 2-1-4 American) is coming off its first conference loss of the season despite scoring three first-half goals, falling 4-3 to Charlotte this past Wednesday.
The Tigers continue to reach offensive heights not seen in years, scoring the most goals (36) in a season since 2011 and having the most multi-goal matches (11) since the 2012 season. A key piece of that has been Renan Syrio, who has eight goals on the year, including five in his last five matches. Keanan Bader has also played a crucial role in Memphis recent success with three goals and an assist in his last two matches. On the season, Memphis has five players with at least four goals, compared to Tulsa only having one player above that threshold.
Memphis' back line has shown flashes in the latter stages of the season, with Junior Saint Juste returning to his regular role while Jin Tokishi and Ryan Ruguaru have each started the last two contests. Marko Stajnko and Ethan Cook also factor in with both around the 1,000 minutes played mark.
In goal, Mathias Christensen has had recent struggles, being subbed off after conceding three goals in 24 minutes against Charlotte, but the junior holds a 3-1-5 record with 31 saves in 10 matches.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Tulsa (7-4-4, 4-1-2 American) recently clinched a spot in the American Conference Championships in a 2-1 win over FIU on Wednesday, scoring on a penalty and an own goal.
Luc Achermann-Stanfield has been the cog that keeps the Golden Hurricane moving, having a team-best eight goals, five assists, 21 points and 36 shots. No other player on the Golden Hurricane is within 14 points or 13 shots of Achermann-Stanfield's marks this season. The attack is supported by Christian Mezas, who has the second-most goals on the team with three and played direct roles on both of Tulsa's goals against FIU, winning the penalty and making the throw-in that the Panthers headed into their own net.
Defensively, Jake Reich has been a piece of consistency for the Golden Hurricane, being one of two outfield players to have started all 15 matches and playing 1,287 minutes, the most of a non-goalkeeper on the roster. He has also added an assist and has five shots on the year.
In goal, Carlito Saylon has performed at a high level, recording at least five saves in four matches this year. He has played all 1,350 minutes in net for the Golden Hurricane this season, carrying a 1.40 goals-against-average with five clean sheets.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST TULSA
Memphis holds a 10-12-3 record against the Golden Hurricane, currently owning a four-match winning streak in a series that has been defined with spurts of dominance. There has never been a back-and-forth element on a year-by-year basis, with each program stringing together at least consecutive seasons without a loss.
In last season's contest in late September, the two teams scored all five goals in the second half, with Eben McIntyre putting the game away in the 76th minute. Also in that matchup, current Tulsa sophomore Arnau Pedrola Fortuny was issued a straight red card for headbutting a Memphis player in the final seconds of action.
POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS
After Wednesday's result against Charlotte, Memphis has not officially clinched a position in the American Conference Tournament.
With a win against Tulsa, the Tigers would lock in a spot as the No. 4 seed and host a first-round matchup against the No. 5 seed. A draw against the Golden Hurricane would complicate things as Memphis would sit at 11 points, with the current Nos. 5-7 teams all having the potential to end on 12 points.
Two of those teams, Florida Atlantic and UAB, will play each other at the same start time, with the third team, FIU, facing Temple on the road on Sunday as well.
A loss would also not eliminate the Tigers from postseason play, but would make it highly unlikely that Memphis would be hosting a first-round matchup in the American Conference Championships.
