Tigers Dominate Charlotte from Start to Finish

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis controlled the afternoon from the opening tip and never looked back, rolling past Charlotte, 77-54, Sunday at FedExForum. The Tigers improved to 12-11 overall and 7-4 in American Conference play, while the 49ers dropped to 13-11 and 7-4.

Memphis never trailed and built separation with its defense in the first half. The Tigers held Charlotte to just 17 points on 6-of-22 shooting in the opening 20 minutes and carried a 37-17 lead into the break. Charlotte did not reach double figures until the final minutes of the half, as Memphis forced 10 first-half turnovers and controlled the glass.

The 17 points match the second fewest allowed in any half since Memphis joined the American. They held UCF to 10 points in the first half in 2016.

Aaron Bradshaw led Memphis with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, adding six rebounds and two blocks. Julius Thedford recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, along with four assists. Sincere Parker finished with 11 points, while Curtis Givens III, Ashton Hardaway and Thierno Sylla each scored 10. It's the second time this season that six Tigers reached double figures after first doing so on Dec. 3 against New Orleans.

Memphis shot 46.0 percent from the field (29-of-63) and assisted on 17 of its 29 made baskets. The Tigers held Charlotte to 36.8 percent shooting and limited the 49ers to 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. Memphis also forced 16 turnovers, which led to 12 points, and finished with a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Charlotte did not cut the margin below 17 points in the second half and Memphis pushed the lead to as many as 23 before the final minute.

Arden Conyers led the 49ers with 14 points, while Dezayne Mingo contributed 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Memphis hits the road next week for a quick two-game western swing, playing twice in three days across two states. The Tigers will first travel to Denton, Texas, for an American Conference matchup at North Texas on Thursday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. Memphis will then make its first-ever trip to Logan, Utah, on Saturday to face Utah State at 7 p.m. on Valentine's Day in a non-conference showdown on CBS Sports Network.

- It's the seventh time this season that Memphis has shot 45.0 percent or better in conference play.
- Turnovers:Â Memphis committed just 10 turnovers, which Charlotte turned into eight points.
- It's the third fewest turnover this season for the Tigers, and the fewest since coughing it up nine times against Baylor on Dec. 6.
- Memphis has recorded 10 or fewer turnovers in a game 47 times since 2018-19, going 34-13 in those contests.
- Defense:Â The Tigers stifled the 49ers to just 36.8 percent shooting overall (21-of-57), including a 21.9-percent mark from long range (7-of-32).
- Memphis has now held 14 opponents to under 30 percent from three-point range this season, including seven in conference play.
- The Tigers have allowed UAB and Charlotte to shoot 16-of-69 (23.1%) from deep over the last two games.
- The Tigers swiped 10 steals and blocked five shots, the seventh time they've reached those numbers in a game this season.
- It's also the 10th game this season with 10 or more steals for the Tigers.
- Bench Production:Â Memphis got 23 points from its bench, its third fewest of the season.
- Just three reserves scored in the win for the Tigers.
- Rebounding:Â Memphis outrebounded Charlotte, 41-32, including a 12-8 mark on the offensive glass.
- Four different Tigers grabbed six or more rebounds, and the team recorded its first double-double of the season.
- Ball Movement:Â Memphis dished out 17 assists, its most since recording 23 against UTSA on Jan. 18.
- Aaron Bradshaw led the Tigers with 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist.
- He shot 7-of-11 from the floor in 24 minutes.
- He has now scored 10-plus points in five straight games and in eight of the last nine.
