Sebek O’Jike Maat (Coach O) returned to his alma mater, the University of Memphis, in 2022 and currently serves as Assistant Coach for the men’s and women’s sprint, hurdle, and relay groups. Since his return, Maat’s athletes have established themselves among the best in program history, producing 10 school records, 13 NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers, and 18 conference medalists in just three seasons.
Most recently, his groups set new standards in both men’s and women’s relays, highlighted by program records in the men’s 4x400m (3:06.02, 2025) and women’s 4x400m (3:32.27, 2025). His event groups have also delivered record-breaking individual performances, including Madison Fleming winning the American conference title in the 60m hurdles (8.17, 2024). She also holds the school record in the 100m hurdles (13.18, 2024). Prior Ochonogor’s 400m hurdles breakthrough (49.87, 2025), and multiple sprint and jump marks led by Jadaja Baxter now sit atop the University of Memphis record boards.
Before returning to Memphis, Maat spent four seasons at Eastern Kentucky University, where he coached sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multis. He was elevated to the title of associate head coach in 2022 after leading EKU athletes to eight school records, 22 top-five all-time program marks, five NCAA East Preliminary entries and eight conference titles, as well as a 2022 USA U-20 Qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles.
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Maat began his tenure at EKU following three years as a sprints coach for the Memphis Mustangs Track Club, where he developed emerging sprinters over a three-year span. A USA Track & Field Level II Certified Coach coach in the sprints, hurdles and relays, Maat has his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Memphis in sport management and health & sport sciences, respectively.
He is married to former University of Memphis soccer standout, Chanel Hudson-Marks and is the father of Amira Ni'Cole Maat and Senbi Kaheri Maat.
