Tigers fall to Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Memphis men's soccer team hung tough with the Charlotte 49ers in the first half of their second match at the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic, but late misfortune and a stagnant offense doomed the Tigers, who fell 4-0 to a Charlotte squad currently ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the NSCAA.
The first half was a showcase of each squad's keepers, with no goals being pushed across on either side. Sophomore Jordan Leedle came away with four first-half saves against a 49er offense that controlled ball pressure in the first half.
Charlotte had five first-half corner kicks and six shots, compared to one and two for the Tigers.
Leedle turned away shots in the 13th, 14th, 29th and 36th minute to keep the match scoreless in the first half.
Junior Parker Duncan represented the Tigers best chance in the opening half, with a shot in the 19th minute that Charlotte's Klay Davis was able to put a mitt on. Sophomore Hugo Mondragon also fired a shot in the first half.
The teams remained deadlocked until the 64th minute, when Charlotte's Aidan Kirkbride came off the bench for the 49ers and finally put the ball past Leedle, had who produced two more saves in the 54th and 56th minutes. Kirkbride's shot came from inside the penalty area and beat Leedle at the bottom right part of the box.
In the 73rd minute, Charlotte's Evan James sent a shot into the box that deflected off of a Tiger and past Leedle, putting the Tigers into a deep hole late in the match.
The 49ers would pour it on late, first with a goal in the 84th minute when Rex Jennings scored into an essentially empty net after Leedle mishandled the ball. The 49ers Will Mayhew capped the scoring in the 90th minute with a header to the back of the net as time wound down.
After scoring a single-game tournament record six goals against North Florida, the Tigers couldn't muster much on the offensive end throughout their match with Charlotte, failing to garner a shot on goal in the second half and mustering just three shots total in the match. Conversely, the 49ers had 17 shots with 11 going on goal.
Defenders Thomas Shannon, who had two goals and an assist in last night's match with North Florida, and Rory O'Connor were named to the all-tournament team.
The Tigers will have a week of rest and recovery before taking on Marshall, next Saturday, at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, beginning at 7 p.m.
