Memphis Opens American Conference Play Friday Night Against FIU
Sep 11, 2025 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (1-2-3) men's soccer returns home for its American Conference opening match against FIU (1-2-2) Friday night. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kick and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The programs share numerous opponents on their 2025 schedules, but the Tigers and Dolphins have never faced each other in a regular season contest.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (1-2-3) enters the contest after a scoreless draw at Jacksonville this past Sunday. During the nonconference slate, the Tigers played multiple sides to draws while suffering a narrow loss to a currently unbeaten Belmont side, but Memphis has not won since a 2-0 victory over Mercer on Aug. 28.
The Tigers polled to finish third in the American Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning one less vote than FIU, 47-to-46, but also earning two first-place votes compared to FIU's one.
A trio of Tigers currently leads the attack in Saad Chaouki, Luciano Galizzi and Eben McIntyre. Chaouki has found the back of the net twice for Memphis in the early stages of the season, while Galizzi and McIntyre each have a goal and two assists on the year. Midfielder Adam Aboohamidi has assisted on two goals this season, both from crosses into the box.
Reigning American Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, Filip Sabatti, has started five of Memphis' six matches, logging 18 saves and one clean sheet. Most recently against Jacksonville, redshirt junior Jakob Buhrkuhl made his first start in net for Memphis, recording a clean sheet with two saves in a draw against the Dolphins.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
FIU (1-2-2) comes into the conference opener after a hard-fought loss against South Carolina and a 2-2 draw against Stony Brook, where the Seawolves scored twice in the second half to earn a result.
The Panthers were picked to finish second in the American Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning one more vote than Memphis, 47-to-46.
FIU currently has three players (Pasquale Capriati, Johan Helan, Eduardo Mustre) with multiple goals on the season, and Capriati leads the team with five goal contributions (two goals, three assists). Graduate transfer midfielder Scott Neil had a strong opening performance for the Panthers, logging three assists in a 4-1 win over Omaha. Neil, along with Capriati, have been named to the American Weekly Honor Roll this season, with Helan being named American Freshman of the Week with a goal in each match against South Carolina and Stony Brook.
The Panthers return their goalkeeping tandem from a year ago of Nigel Van Haveren and Beltran Fernandez. Van Haveren has similar numbers to Memphis' Filip Sabatti, having allowed seven goals and recording 18 saves, but Van Haveren has played one less match than Sabatti so far this season.
THE SERIES WITH FIU
Memphis and FIU have had many heated matches with high stakes since the Panthers joined the American in men's soccer for the 2022 season. Since 2022, Memphis has gone winless against FIU with a record of 0-4-1, with that record also reflecting head coach Richard Mulrooney's record against the Panthers.
Last season, the Tigers and Panthers met twice. They first met on Nov. 1, when Memphis earned a 2-2 draw with goals by Adam Yousfi and Gabriel Christensen, solidifying Memphis as the regular season champion in the American. The pair of programs met again, this time in the American Conference Championship Semifinal, where a 3-1 loss ended Memphis' season. That marked the second time in three seasons that FIU ended Memphis' chances to win an American Conference tournament title.
