MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (1-3-3, 0-1-0 American) men's soccer travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for its final nonconference match of the season against North Carolina (3-1-2, 0-0-2 ACC) Tuesday night. The match is set for a 6 p.m. CT kick and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Both programs are looking to break a dry spell, with the Tigers and Tar Heels both winless in the month of September.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (1-3-3, 0-1-0 American) looks to get a positive result after going winless in its last four matches, dropping its conference-opening match 1-0 to FIU this past Friday.
The Tigers have failed to find the back of the net in their last 247 minutes of play.
A trio of Tigers continues to hold the team lead in points with four, as Saad Chaouki has two goals on the season and Eben McIntyre and Luciano Galizzi each have a goal and two assists in 2025. Chaouki, along with defender Dino Stavros, are the only Tigers to have eclipsed 500 minutes played in Memphis' seven matches, with sophomore defender Ryan Ruguaru sitting just below the mark at 498 minutes.
Reigning American Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, Filip Sabatti, has started five of Memphis' six matches, logging 18 saves and one clean sheet. Most recently against Jacksonville, redshirt junior Jakob Buhrkuhl made his first start in net for Memphis, recording a clean sheet with two saves in a draw against the Dolphins.
Memphis has turned to redshirt junior Jakob Buhrkuhl in net as of late, starting each of the last two matches. The Lewisville, Texas native has six saves on the season with an .857 save percentage in his first season with the Tigers after two seasons at Lee University.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina (3-1-2, 0-0-2 ACC) enters the nonconference match after drawing against No. 5 NC State and No. 4 Wake Forest in the Tar Heels' first matches of the Atlantic Coast Conference slate.
The Tar Heels were ranked 21st in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this past week.
North Carolina is led by graduate transfer Nacho Abeal. The former SIUE Cougar has two goals and three assists on the season, both marks that lead the team. True freshman Ryan Dugan has come off the bend in every match thus far for the Heels but has found the back of the net twice. The pairing of Luca Nikolai and Andrew Czech each have two assists in over 500 minutes this season, with Nikolai also scoring in North Carolina's last win against Evansville.
Andrew Cordes has featured in net for the Tar Heels in every match this season. Facing 21 shots on goal, Cordes has 16 saves and holds a .762 save percentage. As a team, North Carolina currently has the 38th-best goals-against-average in the NCAA.
THE SERIES WITH NORTH CAROLINA
This will just be the second meeting between Memphis and North Carolina, and the first regular season contest between the two programs.
During the 2023 season, the Tigers reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating SIUE at home, but fell to the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C. by a score of 2-0. North Carolina does not return any players involved in the two goals in that match, but Cordes and Czech started for the Tar Heels in the contest, while Dino Stavros is the only Tiger on the 2025 roster who appeared in the postseason match.
