Dedric Lawson's Near-Triple-Double Leads Memphis Past UAB
Dec 10, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis sophomore Dedric Lawson flirted with a triple-double on Saturday afternoon against UAB with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and eight blocked shots, as the Tigers used a big second half to run away from the Blazers in the 62-55 victory.
Lawson hit 8-of-16 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from long range while adding 10 rebounds, eight blocks, and three assists. Markel Crawford tied his season-high in scoring with 16 points, while dishing out three assists and pulling down five rebounds. K.J. Lawson narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Lawson's eight blocked shots are the third-most in a game in program history, trailing just the nine blocked shots from David Vauhn on December 11, 1993 against Georgia State and Keith Lee on December 22, 1981 against Brown.
The Tigers led for just over ten minutes of game-play time, and won after trailing at halftime for the first time since February 28, 2016 against Tulsa.
Memphis struck first with a two-handed dunk from Chad Rykhoek 19 seconds into the contest, before the visitors scored the next eight points to lead by six at 8-2.
Memphis fought back behind a 9-2 run to re-take the lead, and the Tigers kept their advantage until Tosin Mehinti made two free throws with 5:25 to play in the opening half, and the Blazers took a 29-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
UAB's lead grew to as many as nine on a lay-in by Chris Cokley nearly three minutes into the second stanza, before the Tigers started on their comeback attempt.
For the next four and a half minutes the Tigers kept the Blazers without a field goal, and allowed just two over the next eight total minutes, climbing back within one point on a K.J. Lawson jumper with 10:32 to play in the game.
After a free throw by Dirk Williams put the visitors ahead by two, Memphis, behind a loud FedExForum crowd opened a 6-0 run capped by a Jimario Rivers dunk with 7:12 to play, and the Tigers never trailed again in the 62-55 victory.
Memphis hit 22-of-56 shots from the field in the game, while hitting on just 2-of-12 from long range and 16-of-26 from the free throw line. The Tigers were out-rebounded for just the second time this season, 39-to-37, but had 14 assists against just eight turnovers.
UAB was led by Cokley who had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Hakeem Baxter scored 11 and William Lee 10 with five rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, December 13, when the squad hosts the Monmouth Hawks in an 8 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
