Balanced Effort Propels Tigers to 24-Point Win
Dec 21, 2016 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Three Tigers scored 20 or more points, including a career-high 23 from freshman Keon Clergeot, as Memphis out-ran the University of the Incarnate Word by a 95-71 score on Wednesday evening.
Clergeot hit 6-of-7 shots from the field, all four of his three-point attempts, and all seven of his free throws. He added a rebound in 21 minutes of play.
Dedric Lawson, the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, had a game-high 25 points, making 9-of-19 from the field and 5-of-6 free throws, while pulling down a dozen rebounds. The double-double was his 10th of the season, and 27th of his career.
K.J. Lawson added a double-double of his own with 20 points and 12 rebounds, making half of his 12 shots and 7-of-8 free throws. It was his sixth double-double of the season, and one away from tying for sixth for most single-season double-doubles by a freshman.
Jeremiah Martin dished out a game-high seven assists, while each of the Lawson's had four assists. As a team Memphis assisted on 21 of the team's 32 field goals, and the Tigers out-rebounded the Cardinals 45-to-31.
Memphis never trailed in the game, getting a lay-up by Dedric Lawson and a dunk by Markel Crawford, putting the Tigers ahead 4-0 through a minute and a half in the game.
Incarnate Word, despite trailing by 12 early, fought back, cutting the deficit to two at 21-19, and trailed by three at 23-20 with 8:17 to play in the first half.
Over the next 3:46, the Tigers started a run, keyed by Clergeot. After a jumper by Dedric Lawson started the run, Clergeot drained a three-pointer to put Memphis ahead by eight. He took a charge on the next defensive possession, and then made a three-pointer while being fouled the next time down, putting Memphis up by 12.
In all over the 18-0 run, Memphis made all six of its shots from the field, while holding the Cardinals to 0-6 shooting and forcing a turnover.
The first-half lead grew to as many as 21, with the Tigers taking a 54-34 lead into the locker room at halftime, thanks in part to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Craig Randall II.
The second-half lead grew to as many as 32, and closed at 24 after the Tigers emptied their bench for the last three-plus minutes of the game.
Memphis made 46.4 percent of its shots in the game (32-of-69), and 10-of-23 (43.5%) from beyond the arc.
Incarnate Word put five players in double-figure scoring, led by 18 points from Jalin Hart and 13 from both Simi Socks and Shawn Johnson.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, December 27, when the team opens play in the American Athletic Conference against the Mustangs of SMU in an 8 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum.
