BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Memphis freshman Tai Bierria recorded a season high for kills and senior Catlin Lilly added four service aces to lift the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over Louisiana at UAB's Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational Friday afternoon.
Memphis returns to action against host UAB Friday night at 7 p.m. (CT).
The Tigers won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20. With the win, Memphis improved to 6-4. The Ragin' Cajuns fell to 2-11.
"This was a nice team win," said head coach April Jauregui. "It was great to see us execute some things we focused on in practice this week.
"That was the most-complete offensive match we've had so far this season. We have to keep working, but it's a step in the right direction."
Bierria played the best match of her young career with a season-best 12 kills. She also had three digs and a .303 attack percentage. Lilly had six kills, three blocks and nine digs to go along with her four aces.
Senior McKenize Hayes recorded a .462 attack percentage and seven kills. Fellow senior Michaella Moss had 15 digs. Regan Comperry (16 assists) and Faith Myers (14) split time at setter in the match.
The Tigers never trailed in any of the three sets, and Louisiana only tied the match three times early in the second set.
In the opening set, Memphis jumped out to a 6-1 lead with Comperry, Bierria and Lilly recording kills in the run. Louisiana cut the Tigers' lead to three points midway through the first set, but couldn't get any closer. Memphis held a 17-14 advantage and closed the set with an 8-4 spurt for the 25-18 win.
The second set started as a tight affair with the score tied at 4-all early. Memphis, though, used a 14-2 run to take an 18-6 lead and control of the set. Bierria posted four of her 12 kills in the spurt. The Tigers won the second set 25-14.
The final set was all Memphis from the start. The Tigers built a 10-3 advantage with kills from Bierria and Lilly. With Memphis holding a 16-7 lead, the Ragin' Cajuns made one final push with a 9-2 run to close to within two at 18-16. The Tigers, however, regained control of the third set and won 25-20.
