Tigers Volleyball Returns Home To Face UConn, Temple
Sep 29, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Matches are first at Elma Roane Fieldhouse since Sept. 3.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The old saying goes, "There's no place like home."
For the University of Memphis volleyball team, it hopes the friendly confines of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse gets it back on track this weekend when the Tigers host their American Athletic Conference home openers. Memphis welcomes league foes Connecticut Friday, Sept. 30 and Temple Sunday, Oct. 2 to the Bluff City. Friday's match is set for 7 p.m. (CT), and Sunday's encounter starts at 12 p.m. (CT).
Friday's showdown is Memphis' first home match since Sept. 3 – a span of 27 days. When they last played at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, the Tigers wrapped up their own Tiger Invitational championship with a 3-1 win over Louisiana Tech. This weekend, Memphis looks to get back in the win column with two conference home matches.
"It's going to be another strong weekend of competition, but I can say that every weekend of our conference season," said head coach April Jauregui. "That's what we explain to our players, especially the younger ones. There are no mental breaks, no days off. You have to bring your best every day for a chance to win in this conference.
"It's a tough grind. There's really no true off days, even though we do take Mondays off because of NCAA rules. At least we're home this weekend and can have a little more down time and rest between the two matches."
Memphis brings an 8-6 overall record and a 0-2 league mark into this weekend's action after dropping both matches on its Florida road swing. The Tigers fell to UCF 3-0 Sept. 23 and USF 3-1 Sept. 25.
"We struggled getting going at UCF," Jauregui said. "At USF, we started slow, but picked it up later in the match. USF was a little sharper than we were. This week, we're focused on clicking and executing on our side of the net.
"We have to focus on us getting better. We have some things we are doing well, but as you play, your weaknesses get exposed. We try to put pressure on our players to execute in practice, and that gives us the best opportunities to win matches."
The Tigers' task won't be easy this weekend, as Connecticut and Temple both have played well early this season. The Huskies and Owls played a mid-week match Wednesday, and Temple squeaked out a gutty 3-2 win in Storrs, Conn.
"UConn's had a great season so far and playing really well right now," Jauregui said. "Temple is good and went through some lineup changes earlier this season. The Owls have a high-powered offense."
