Tigers Take to Houston for Battle With Cougars on Thursday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers travel to Houston, Texas, to take on the Houston Cougars in a game between head coaches that have a combined 55 years and 1,118 between them in Memphis' Tubby Smith and Houston's Kelvin Sampson.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Houston comes into the Thursday evening game after splitting its last four games, including a 77-70 loss at UCF on Saturday afternoon.
   In the loss to UCF, Rob Gray and Galen Robinson Jr. each scored over 20 points; however, the Knights out-scored Houston in both halves in the seven-point UCF win.
   Gray hit 12-of-21 shots from the field and 3-of-5 free throws for 28 points, while Robinson Jr. made 8-of-14 shots and 3-of-6 from distance. Damyean Dotson hit 2-of-5 from long range and 4-of-8 overall, scoring 10 points, with Danrad Knowles scoring eight points, making 2-of-7 shots and four free throws.
   Dotson pulled down a game-high-tying eight rebounds, while Gray dished out three assists. Both Gray and Robinson picked up three steals, and Bertrand Nkali the team's only block.
   Gray, the leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference, averages 20.8 points per game, with Dotson (14.6) standing second on the team. Devin Davis averages 10.1 points per game, but has played just once in the last 10 games, reaggravating a foot injury on December 31. Knowles (9.2) and Wes VanBeck (8.9) sit just off of the double-figure scoring pace.
   Robinson Jr., who averages 6.7 points per game, has dished out a team-high 88 assists, while Gray has picked up a team-high 24 steals. Nkali (23) and Knowles (20) combine for 43 of the team's 70 blocked shots this season.

A large similarity between the Tubby Smith-coached Memphis Tigers and the Kelvin Sampson-coached Houston Cougars is that both coaches have employed their sons on the staff. Smith brought with him his son and former University of Kentucky standout Saul Smith to his staff. Sampson has his son Kellen on his staff for his third season. Sampson earned three letters with the Oklahoma Sooners from 2004 to 2007. Additionally, Houston also has his daughter, Lauren Sampson as Director for External Operations.
