Memphis returns to conference action this weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Lipscomb Wednesday night by a score of 3-1. The Tigers fall to 2-6-3 on the year.
"Tonight was a tough match with opportunities we were unable to capitalize on," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Lipscomb is a solid program, but we have to finish our chances. Now it's time to focus on SMU this weekend."
After over 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, Lipscomb took a 1-0 lead on a shot from outside the 18-yard box. The Tigers had chances, however, as Memphis outshot Lipscomb 9-4 in the first half.
In the 67th minute of the match, Memphis tied up the contest with Brantley Bice's first collegiate goal. David Zalzman earned the assist after playing Bice in at the top of the box.
The tie lasted for 10 minutes before Lipscomb scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. In the 85th minute, the Bisons went up 3-1 after following up a penalty kick save by Jake Leeker.
Memphis finished the match outshooting Lipscomb 23-13 and in all, Leeker finished with seven saves.
The Tigers will now travel to SMU for a conference match Saturday evening at 7 p.m. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
