Men’s Soccer Heads To Texas To Face SMU

Tigers jump back into conference play this weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team travels to Dallas, Texas to face No. 17 SMU for an American Athletic Conference match Saturday evening. Kick-off against the Mustangs is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.

In the 3-1 setback to Lipscomb Wednesday evening, freshman forward Brantley Bice scored his first collegiate goal off of an assist from David Zalzman. The Tigers fired off 23 shots compared to Lipscomb's 13 shots in the match that dropped the Tigers to 2-6-3 on the year. Goalkeeper Jake Leeker had seven saves on the night.
Led by head coach Richard Mulrooney, the Tigers head out for their second-to-last road contest of the season, entering a home-heavy back half of the schedule. Memphis returns home for two matches next week, hosting UCA and USF. The match against USF will be at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex on the Park Avenue Campus.
In the conference standings, Memphis sits in fourth place with four points. USF and UConn, both 3-0 in conference play, pace the AAC.
A Look at SMU
The Mustangs await Memphis after a 6-0 victory over Northeastern Tuesday night. Four SMU players scored in the match, including two players who scored for the first time this season. Goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded three saves, combining with Grant Makela for the shutout. It was Makela's first appearance in goal in 2017.
SMU, with a 9-2 overall record and 2-1 conference record, is coached by third-year head coach Kevin Hudson. Mauro Chichero and Garrett McLaughlin lead the team in goals scored with eight apiece. They are the only players to have more than one goal to their name this season. Michael Nelson has 30 saves and four shutouts in the net.
The Mustangs are currently third in the AAC standings behind USF and UConn. SMU holds an 11-3 all-time advantage over the Tigers.
