Second Half Rally Comes up Short Against Nationally Ranked Bearcats

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Memphis Tigers cut a Cincinnati 24-point first-half lead to as few as six, but could not overcome the full deficit on the road against the 15th ranked Bearcats, falling 87-74 on Thursday evening.
Jeremiah Martin scored a game-high 23 points while dishing out a career-best 11 assists. The sophomore Memphis native hit 8-of-12 shots from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe for the near-career-high scoring effort.
Dedric Lawson picked up his 18th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the 35th double-double of his career. He made 9-of-16 shots from the field while dishing out three assists.
K.J. Lawson scored 15 points - including 11 in the second half - as he made 7-of-13 shots from the field and pulled down five rebounds with two assists.
Jimario Rivers was perfect from the field, making all six of his shots for 12 points, while adding two rebounds and an assist.
Memphis (18-10, 8-7 American Athletic Conference) made 54.4 percent (31-of-57) of its shots from the field in the loss, including 18-of-31 (58.1 percent) in the second half. The team also had 20 assists 31 made baskets, against just 12 turnovers.
Cincinnati (25-3, 14-1 American) never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead through the first three minutes, and driving the lead to as many as 24 with 3:44 to play in the first half, before the Tigers started clawing back, out-scoring the Bearcats 10-5 over the final three-plus minutes, cutting the deficit to 19 heading into the break at halftime.
The Bearcats' lead reached as many as 20 in the second half with 13:05 to play, before the Tigers started their comeback, rolling off a 17-6 run to close into single digits four and a half minutes later, capped by a thunderous dunk by Dedric Lawson.
Memphis trimmed the margin down to as few as six following a Martin three-point play; however, Cincinnati countered with an 8-0 run to lead by 14, before settling on the 13-point final margin.
Cincinnati was led by Kyle Washington who scored 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Jacob Evans scored 15 and Gary Clark 13.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, February 26, when the squad hosts the Houston Cougars in a 4 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum on CBS Sports Network.
