Tigers created chances, unable to score in non-conference match
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match against Northern Kentucky Monday evening by a score of 2-0. Memphis falls to 2-4-2 overall and will return back to conference play this weekend at home against Temple.
"We have to find some type of consistency," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "It's scary to think we have this type of performance in us. Rightfully so, we got beat tonight. It's a hard lesson to learn after coming off of a big conference win."
Memphis created an opportunity early in the match that ultimately presented the Tigers with a corner kick in the second minute. Northern Kentucky proceeded to clear the Tigers' opportunity at a potential score.
The Tigers continued to pressure the Norse throughout the first half. Northern Kentucky, however, capitalized first in the 20th minute of the match.
Northern Kentucky added one more goal early in the second half to pull ahead, 2-0, on the Tigers. Memphis had several opportunities including one in the 82nd minute where the ball found the back of the net, but the Tigers were called offsides.
The Tigers finished with six corners compared to three by Northern Kentucky. Jake Leeker ended the match with six saves.
Memphis now will prepare to host Temple in the conference home opener Saturday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Kick-off against the Owls is slated for 7 p.m. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
