Tigers force overtime with goal in final nine seconds of regulation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team dropped a double overtime heartbreaker Saturday evening to Temple by a score of 2-1. The Tigers fall to 2-5-2 on the year and 1-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
"We deserved to get something out of this match," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "We weren't a push over. When you have critical errors, it's a dagger in the heart. This hurts because I thought we fought back tooth and nail to score in the final seconds of regulation."
With nine seconds remaining in regulation and down 1-0, sophomore defender Ben Roberts launched a shot from outside the top of the box that found the back of the net to force overtime against the Owls.
Before Roberts' goal, the Owls got on the board in the 63rd minute with a successful penalty kick.
The teams battled it out through the first overtime, but in the 102nd minute of the match, Temple capitalized and ended with contest with a shot from the left side.
Memphis finished the match with five corners while not allowing any for Temple. The Tigers had control for much of the match including the first half where Memphis fired off six shots compared to three by the Owls.
The Tigers return to action next weekend with a road trip to UCF on Oct. 7 Kick-off against the Knights is slated for 6 p.m. CT. For more information on the Memphis men's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisMSoccer.
