Tigers drop decision to UCF
Oct 11, 2018 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After an early deficit, Memphis women's soccer couldn't quite catch the momentum needed to mount a comeback, dropping just its second match of the season in a 2-0 setback to UCF.
Although the Tigers (12-2-0, 4-1-0) outshot the Knights (7-4-1, 4-1-0), the UCF defense limited a potent Memphis attack.
"It was a good game. They beat us in the fine details," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We just weren't sharp enough in the final third. Every play matters and they were a little sharper than we were.
"There are some really good teams in our conference. You can't look at the rankings. We knew this was going to be a battle. It was going to come down to the small details, and today they got us there."
UCF scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute to take an early advantage into halftime.
The Tigers' best chance of the match came in the opening minutes of the second half. Memphis added pressure in the attacking zone by creating space but couldn't find the back of the net.
"It wasn't about the effort tonight. I'm proud of the girls for the intensity," Monaghan added. "I just keep circling back to the fine little details that you have to be sharper."
The Knights silenced the comeback bid with a goal in the 64th minute to set the 2-0 final.
The Tigers will be back in action Sunday against No. 24 South Florida. Kickoff against the Bulls is set for 1 p.m.
