Tigers post 11th clean sheet of season
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 22 Memphis women's soccer posted its 11th shutout of the season after a 1-0 victory against Temple on a windy Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
"It was a tough one, to say the least. The conditions weren't ideal with winds at 20 miles per hour and playing on turf," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It wasn't our normal style of soccer. I think it's a sign of a good team when you have to get those ugly wins. The girls adapted to the conditions and did what they needed to do."
Memphis (14-3, 6-2) found the offense it needed within the first two minutes of the contest for a quick score. Serena Dolan brought the ball up the left side of the pitch and sent a pass up the field, where a dashing Clarissa Larisey split the defense and pushed a shot in the right side of the net.
The Tigers continued their pressure, posting 11 shots in the first half while limiting Temple (7-9-1, 3-4-1) to just a single shot attempt at the break.
Temple outshot Memphis by an 8-7 margin in the second half, but the Tigers' defense stood tall to preserve the shutout. In goal, Elizabeth Moberg tallied four saves, with three coming in the last 45 minutes.
"The first half we had the winds and the second half we didn't. We knew it would become more defensive, and they did a great job," Monaghan added. "We shifted some players around and played some people in different positions. They all did extremely well in being able to adjust to different positions."
The Tigers return to Memphis for their regular-season finale against Tulsa on Friday. Senior Day against the Golden Hurricane is set for 7 p.m.
