Volleyball Defeats Tennessee Tech 3-1

Memphis wins its third-straight match, goes for Tiger Invitational title Saturday.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Kelsey Walter tied a career-high in kills and added a match-best seven total blocks to lift the Tigers to a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Tennessee Tech in the nightcap of the 2018 Tiger Invitational Friday.
The Tigers won the match by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 28-26 and 25-21. With the win, Memphis evens it record at 5-5. The Golden Eagles now are 6-4.
Walter's 10 kills tied a career-high which she set earlier this season. She had 10 kills versus UT Martin Aug. 31. The Memphis middle blocker also had seven total blocks for her fourth-consecutive match with five or more blocks. Walter has six matches with five or more total blocks this season.
Memphis wraps up play in the Tiger Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Tigers play North Alabama at 1 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Admission is free.

"We're working hard every day in the gym. We try to put the players in positions where they are up sometimes and other times, they are down and have to fight back. It all starts in practice with our senior leadership. They are contributing in so many ways, and it's really sparked us."

- Hannah Flowers had her seventh-straight double-figure kills match this season with 17 knockdowns versus Tennessee Tech Friday. She also hit at a .419 clip in the match.
- The double-figures kills match was Flowers' 20thof her career.
- Kelsea Bivins logged the sixth double-double performance of her career versus Tennessee Tech (15 kills/11 digs). It was her third of the season.
- Bivins posted the 17thdouble-figures kills match of her career against Tennessee Tech.
- Bre Carlton came off the bench and recorded a season-best 19 assists.

Set One
- Memphis and Tennessee Tech answered each other point-for-point in the opening 22 points, with six ties.
- The last of those ties came at 11-all.
- The Tigers put together a 3-0 mini-run for a 14-11 lead.
- Kelsey Walter and Kelsea Bivins each collected one kill in the spurt.
- The Golden Eagles answered with a 4-0 run to retake the advantage at 15-14.
- After a 16-all tie, Tennessee Tech used a 4-1 run to push out to a 20-17 lead.
- The Golden Eagles built their lead to five at 23-18, but the Tigers did not go away.
- Memphis went on a 5-1 run to close the gap to 24-23.
- Two Bivins kills and one Anna Palmer kill keyed the spurt.
- Tennessee Tech won the set 25-23 on a Tigers' attack error.
Set Two
- Memphis jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on kills from Palmer, Walter and Hannah Flowers.
- The Tigers continued to hold a narrow 8-7 advantage, but the Golden Eagles went on a 6-2 run for a 13-10 lead.
- Memphis fought back to tie the set at 13-all.
- The set was tied four times over the next eight points, with the last one coming at 17-all.
- The Tigers used a 5-1 spurt to grab a 22-18 lead.
- Kills from Bivins (2), Palmer and Molly Murrihy ignited the run.
- The Golden Eagles fought back to tie the set at 22-all, but three-straight errors gave Memphis the set 25-22.
Set Three
- The Tigers grabbed a 7-3 lead off kills from Bivins, Flowers and Palmer.
- Tennessee Tech battled back to knot the set at 9-all, but the Tigers had an answer.
- Memphis went on a 9-4 spurt to take an 18-13 advantage.
- Kelsey Walter had two kills in the run.
- Tennessee Tech pulled to within 20-19, but a 4-1 Memphis run put the Tigers on the doorstep of clinching the set.
- The Golden Eagles, however, fought back to regain the lead at 25-24 and have a set point on their serve.
- Memphis responded to with two-straight points for a 26-25 advantage, with the go-ahead point coming on a Flowers kill.
- After Tennessee Tech tied the set at 26-all, Flowers' back-to-back kills ended the set and gave Memphis the 28-26 win.
Set Four
- Memphis ran out to a 5-2 advantage and never trailed in the set.
- The Tigers extended their lead to five points on three occasions at 12-7, 14-9 and 16-11.
- Memphis maintained some breathing room down the stretch, with Tennessee Tech only closing to within three points.
- A Sarah Marlatt kill gave Memphis the 25-21 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
