Tigers Kickoff 2023 Season at Green Bay, Northern Illinois
Aug 23, 2023 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team is escaping the southern heat for cooler weather as they open their 2023 season at Green Bay on Thursday night and Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
"Very excited that the season is here," said head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. "The team made the most of a compacted preseason and the three exhibition games. There were a lot of positives and a lot of things learned but I feel that the guys got what they needed to accomplish a win this weekend."
Memphis (9-6-4, 5-3-1 AAC) is coming off a successful season where they made it to the American Athletic Conference Championship semi-finals before earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament – the program's first at-large bid and their first trip to the Big Dance since the 2004 season.
Memphis returns a bundle of familiar faces in Colin Welsh, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and Alberto Cruz, who all earned AAC All-Conference honors last season, along with Hayden Anderson, Jackson Kim, Bryce Meredith, Brandon Brackett and Jose Maria Ojeda.
Mulrooney and staff were hard at work in the off-season, bringing in 15 new faces to the program, who will make an immediate impact for the Tigers.
Green Bay (6-3-7, 2-2-5 Horizon) is coming off a bounce back season after just nearly missing the Horizon League Championship following a tie with Cleveland State in their season finale. The Phoenix returns a good portion of their team from last year, including the Horizon Goalkeeper of the Year, Tobias Jahn.
Last season when the two teams met, Green Bay was undefeated and on the brink of breaking into the top-25 before the Tigers handed them their first loss of the season. A PK in the 81' from Memphis would give them the edge they needed to secure the 1-0 win.
Thursday's match will be just the second ever meeting between the teams.
Northern Illinois (5-8-4, 2-5-1 MAC) finished out their time in the Mid-American Conference last season after falling 6-0 to Bowling Green in their season finale. The Huskies start a new era this season as they join the Missouri Valley Conference as affiliate members.
The Huskies return much of their roster from last season while adding in 11 newcomers.
Sunday's match will be the first meeting between NIU and Memphis.
Thursday's match at Green Bay is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+. Sunday's matchup with Northern Illinois will kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
