MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers will open American Athletic Conference play against SMU on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Memphis is coming off a 3-1 win at home against Little Rock and is looking to capitalize off the momentum heading into conference play.
"We are looking forward to starting conference play with a quick turnaround from ending our non-conference slate this past Saturday & hitting the road Tuesday for a Wednesday matchup versus SMU. We like to talk about the season being broken down into mini-seasons with our non-conference tournaments being a short 4-week season and now we start our conference season." Head coach Sean Burdette shared. "Everyone in the American is now 0-0 and looking to make their mark. With the American being one of the top conferences in the country, every match is a battle. You have to prepare day-in and day-out for each opponent. This is a tough stretch for all the teams in the conference with 3 matches in 5 days. We look forward to the SMU matchup."
SMU has started the season at 6-5, with an undefeated record at home and is currently boasting a three-match win streak. The Mustangs narrowly edged Rice for the top spot in the west division of AAC preseason coaches' poll and projected to close out the season as conference champions. SMU is currently hitting a .227 clip and averaging 12.9 kills per set. The Mustangs are led by Naya Shime (107), Natalie Perdue (105) and Emma Clothier (103) offensively, along with Brooke Frazier and Celia Cullen who are averaging over 2.50 digs per set.
Memphis comes into the conference play after going 1-2 last weekend in the Beale Street Challenge. Freshman Autumn Flynn was named to the All-Tournament Team after hitting .539 against Southern Miss and .450 against Little Rock. The Tigers are led offensively by Tabytha Toelke (105) followed by Clara Bednarek (83) along with averaging 14.75 digs per set, led by Abigail Schlueter with 3.70 digs per set.
