Oct 14, 2024 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis men's soccer team hosts a No. 17 ranked Missouri State squad for a nonconference match Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Memphis (6-4-2, 3-0-1 AAC) is unbeaten in its last seven matches coming into tomorrow night's clash. During that streak, the Tigers have outscored opponents, 10-3 and find themselves at the top of the American Athletic Conference for the second week in a row as the only unbeaten squad in conference play.
Memphis most recently drew with Temple in Philadelphia, Pa. this past Saturday.
Early in the match, Memphis pressed Temple heavily and outshot the Owls 8-3 but could not find the back of the net. The second half flipped the script, as Temple had numerous chances while Memphis did not record a shot on target in the final 45 minutes. The Owls had a chance with an open Memphis net in the final 20 minutes, but Logan Longo stopped a shot on the goal line to preserve the score.
Two Tigers earned weekly honorable mentions in the AAC. Logan Longo earned his fourth weekly nod after making a goal line clearance against Temple that kept the match scoreless. Filip Sabatti earned his third straight weekly recognition after recording his fourth clean sheet in a row.
Lleyton Imparato still leads the Tigers in goal contributions with eight (four goals, four assists). After last match, Logan Longo and Jackson Kim eclipsed the 1000-minute mark in time played this season. The duo, along with Luciano Galizzi, have been the only Tigers to start in all 12 matches.
Missouri State (8-2-1, 4-0-1 MVC) comes into the match ranked 17th in the nation. The Bears hold an eight-match unbeaten streak with their most recent loss coming at the hands of Missouri – Kansas City by a score of 3-2 on Sept. 2.
The Bears are led by Jesus Barea, who currently sits tied at 4th nationally with 10 goals. The senior from Spain is also one of only three Bears to have started in all eleven matches this season. 20 of Missouri State's goals have been scored by a trio of forwards. As previously mentioned, Barea leads the charge with 10, but James Jennings has also scored six this season and Fumiya Shiraishi has four on his 2024 campaign. The Bears also have a midfield pairing that has started every match in Tyler Caton and Alex Matthews.
In net, Missouri State had used two goalkeepers almost to an equal extent. Redshirt senior Will Lowry has been between the pipes in the Bears' last six matches, accumulating a 0.37 goals-against-average while only facing nine shots on target.
Memphis holds a lead in the all-time series with a record of 8-5-2. In last year's iteration of this matchup, the Tigers upset the Bears, who were ranked 9th in the country at the time by a score of 1-0. Giorgios Kondylis had the game-winning goal in Memphis' victory.
Next, Memphis will travel to Tampa, Fla. where the Tigers will face off against South Florida on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
