Tigers Battle Back to Earn 1-1 Result Against Aces

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Memphis (1-1-2) men's soccer played Evansville (0-1-3) to a 1-1 draw Sunday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Early fouls by the Memphis back line allowed Evansville to take an early lead on a penalty. Memphis answered back in the first half with a goal by Luciano Galizzi and that score held despite 13 shots from the Aces in the second half.
KEY MOMENTS
The Tigers play two nonconference matches against programs from the state of Florida during the coming week. First, Memphis will play host to FGCU on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to the Sunshine State to take on Jacksonville on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 6:00 p.m. CT. Memphis' match against FGCU will be broadcast on ESPN+ and broadcast details for Sunday's match at Jacksonville are yet to be determined.

KEY MOMENTS
- 17' – An attempt to get a hand on a pass into the box led to Filip Sabatti committing a foul that awarded the Aces with a penalty kick. Tancredi Fadda stepped up to the spot and hit the crossbar, keeping the match level.
- 20' – Another foul in the box during an Evansville breakaway gave the Aces a second try from the penalty spot. Martin Wurschmidt took the second penalty, finding the back of the net to give the Aces an early 1-0 lead.
- 33' – A Memphis counterattack began when Adam Aboohamidi sent a cross through the box that was headed back in by Denis O. John before Luciano Galizzi got a foot to the pass to bring the match level at one goal apiece.
- Aboohamidi and John were both credited with an assist on the Galizzi goal.
- 67' – Evansville recorded four shots from two corner kick opportunities in the 67th minute with one save by Filip Sabatti and two blocked shots from the Memphis back line.
- 86' – Martin Wurschmidt had a chance to record a brace in the match and give Evansville the lead in the final five minutes of the match, but his header went off-target.
- Memphis' opponents have now had three penalty kick attempts through four matches, with two goals off penalty kicks.
- Memphis has not allowed three penalty kicks in a single season since 2022, when its opponents were 2-for-3 on penalties in the full season.
- The last time a Memphis opponent earned two penalties in the same match was Oct. 22, 2021, when Tulsa successfully converted on two penalty attempts.
- The shot comparison was heavily in favor of Evansville, 24-to-7, and Evansville doubled Memphis' shot-on-goal total, 6-to-3.
- It was the first time this season that Memphis was held under 10 shots.
- The Tigers only recorded one shot in the second half, compared to Evansville's 13 in the frame.
- Luciano Galizzi's goal at the 33-minute mark was his fifth as a Tiger and his 17th collegiate goal.
- Galizzi is now tied with Eben McIntyre for the team lead in points, as each have three points on a goal and an assist.
- Adam Aboohamidi, who was credited with an assist on Galizzi's goal, is tied with Galizzi and McIntyre in goal contributions with two, but trails in the point total as both contributions were assists.
- Filip Sabatti matched his season high with five saves in the contest.
- It is the fifth time Sabatti has recorded five saves in his two seasons at Memphis.
- The Memphis freshman class continues to log meaningful minutes in each match so far as Ignacio Escamilla, Miller Lashlee, Carson Banham and Anthony Grudko have played in all four matches.
- Grudko leads all Memphis freshmen in minutes played (199) but Escamilla leads the group in starts with two.
- Four Tigers (Filip Sabatti, Michael Holliday, Dino Stavros, Saad Chaouki) logged 90 minutes in the match.
- After four matches, Memphis and its opponents both have a goals-per-game average of one.
- For the first time this season, there was not a single card issued to either team.
- It was the first time since a matchup against FIU on Nov. 1, 2024, that neither team in a match involving Memphis were issued a card.
- Both teams committed 13 fouls in the contest. Memphis is now currently averaging 12.25 fouls per match.
