Sep 02, 2025 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (1-1-2) men's soccer returns home to face the FGCU Eagles on Wednesday night. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kick and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The programs share numerous opponents on their 2025 schedules, but the Tigers and Eagles have never faced each other in a regular season contest.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (1-1-2) comes into the match after playing Evansville to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. In the match, two early fouls led to consecutive penalty kicks for Evansville, converting on the latter of the two. Memphis equalized in the 33rd minute on a goal by Luciano Galizzi and that score held through the second half, despite Evansville outshooting the Tigers 13-to-1.
A pair of Tigers, Eben McIntyre and Luciano Galizzi, are tied for the team lead in points with three on one goal and one assist. Saad Chaouki and Fletcher Hedge have also found the back of the net this season, with Adam Aboohamidi leading the team in assists with two.
After conceding three goals in two matches, goalkeeper Filip Sabatti has returned to form, currently sitting with 14 saves on the season with a save percentage of .778 on 18 shots-on-goal.
In Memphis' last match against Evansville, the Tigers were out-shot heavily as Evansville began to push the pace, especially in the second half. Through the entire match, Evansville outshot Memphis 24-to-7, with the shot comparison being 13-to-1 in the second half alone. On the season, the Tigers are being outshot 53-to-43 and Memphis has committed 50 fouls compared to its opponents' 39 fouls.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
FGCU (1-2-0) enters the midweek match after falling to American Conference opponent, South Florida, by a score of 3-2. FGCU overcame a two-goal deficit to tie the match in the 55th minute, but USF's Jakob Auby scored in the 83rd minute to give FGCU the loss.
The Eagles were polled second in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning one first place vote for Oliver Twelvetrees' first season at the helm.
Despite FGCU's record and having played one less match than Memphis, the Eagles have matched Memphis' goal total. Caio Oliveira has led FGCU's offense with five points (two goals, one assist) and Edson Murguia is close behind with one goal and one assist. Graduate defender Ignatius Denmark has also logged a goal this season.
Goalkeeper Oliver Weng has played every minute in net for the Eagles this season. On 40 total shots faced, Weng has recorded 14 saves on 20 shots-on-goal, conceding six goals. The sophomore from Washington, D.C. is coming off a season where he started in all nine matches that he appeared in, earning one shutout.
THE SERIES WITH FGCU
This will be the first meeting ever between the Memphis Tigers and FGCU Eagles. Despite sharing multiple opponents due to FGCU's geographic location compared to teams in the American and Memphis' ties to ASUN Conference opponents, the two have yet to be paired up for a competition.
