Memphis Defeats UT Martin in Four Sets to Close Carrie Yerty Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (7-2) defeated UT Martin (1-7) in four sets on Saturday at Elma Roane Fieldhouse to close out the Carrie Yerty Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
During the opening set, Memphis and UT Martin went back and forth for the first nine points but the Skyhawks went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-9 lead. Kylie Surratt and Maddy Gladson led the offense for the Skyhawks for the 25-15 set victory.
In the second set, the Tigers would take control with 16-5 run with kills from Amanda Hardt and Sydney Marshall. UT Martin went on a small run with kills Surratt and Kristin Phillips, but that was not enough because the Tigers would continue to win the set, 25-12.
The Tigers and Skyhawks traded points early in the third set before Memphis pulled ahead with a 5-1 run capped by a Mandy Lawson ace to make it 20-16. Amanda Hardt finished the set strong with a pair of late kills as Memphis claimed the frame 25-18.
The Tigers controlled the fourth set from the start, using early kills from Janyah Henderson to take momentum. UT Martin kept pace midway through, closing the gap to 18-16, but Memphis answered with a late 7-2 run. Amanda Hardt and Brianna Washington pushed the Tigers towards match point and Abigail Schlueter capped the match with a service ace to secure the 25-18 win and take the match.

Memphis will head down to the Magnolia State to face Ole Miss for the first time since 2018 on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The match will begin 6:30 p.m. with a broadcast on SEC Network+ at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

- Memphis is currently off to its best start through nine games since 2019, when the Tigers began the season 11-0.
- Amanda Hardt and Zaniah Hoskins led the offense in kills with 23 and 10, respectively.
- Hardt recorded three consecutive 20-plus kill performances, finishing the weekend with a total of 81 kills, averaging 6.75 kills per set.
- Hardt accounted for 88.5 of Memphis' points in the Carrie Yerty Classic.
- Abigail Schlueter set a new season high in digs for the third match in a row with 22 in the victory.
- Maddy Bach had a total of 38 assists for the Tigers, finishing the Carrie Yerty Classic with 143 assists, for an average of 11.92 assists per set.
- On the season, Bach is averaging 10.06 assists per set, a mark that is at the top of the American Conference.
- Bach was the only Tiger to record a double-double in the win, logging 10 digs in combination with her 38 assists.
